I have a desktop with a wired connection, there is no wifi (altering the Modem, Router, Switch for wifi is NOT an option).

I know there are USB adapters that can be used as hotspots. I am just not sure which one to purchase to accomplish what I am trying to do.

1. Use Wifi to update other hardware that is unable to connect to my wired connection
2. Use for my Roku
3. Password protected connection
4. Easily remove when not in use & easy reinstall
5. inexpensive
6. Speed is not critical, fast enough to use for a Roku

Will using my Desktop in this way impact its performance in anyway?

Sorry in advance if any of these questions are wrong headed or too basic for this forum

OK, did'nt know.
Yes it can affect the performance of your PC, to what degree depends on the amount of data being transferred and your internet connection.
Try any one of these from NewEgg, preferably a USB 3.0 model

https://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=USB+3.0+wifi+adapter&ignorear=0&N=-1&isNodeId=1

If the results are unsatisfactory, then return it for another.
Too many variables to consider to offer a decent suggestion. Cheap and good sometimes do not go hand in hand
