Was 3dfx's price-politcis too "public-friendly"?

I remember building my first PC, it was in the year 1999 and Banshee's were fresh from the factory. It was the most expensive Voodoo card available and was really cool, hard to believe but i used it almost 3 years.. It was 135$ as the MOST expensive product. Today, we have R9700 at the price like 350$, or we had Ti 4600 before a few months ago with the price 350~400$.. I cannot see any difference between R9700 and Banshee.. OK, maybe the new cards have much expensiver memory but hey, that's just normal, we had at that time 64Mb system memory.. What's wrong now? Voodoo's were too cheap or today's cards are too expensive. I believe it's NOT unfair to compare Voodoo's and R9700..
And if the situation will continue as today, then how much will be a GeForce6?

Voodoo Banshee was top 3D chip in 1999?

IIRC, Banshee came after Voodoo2. In 1999 there were Voodoo3, top 3D chip of 3Dfx. Nvidia also released their GeForce256 at 3rdQ of same year. Voodoo Banshee was much like today's Radeon 8500.

I mean with Banshee all the series. And wanna bet? In the January'99 Banshee's were the newest chipsets, (of course it was after Voodoo2). There was NO sign of GeForce, hey, in these days there was even no TNT2!

He's right, I bought Voodoo Banshee then, it rocked, I was so impressed with the 3DFX screen before the game starts, hahaha.
I still have that old computer, but my friend helped me out and gave me his old Voodoo 3 3000, so now I use it (going to buy a whole new computer in October!)

It REALLY rocked. My Banshee was the only computer-part which i really LOVED. I was very sad when i sold it. :frown:

Are you going to wait for new parts until October?

What new parts?
I'm building my own system, not 100% sure, but near, it's:
AMD ATHLON XP (Thoroughbred) 2200+ 1.8Ghz 0.13micron + FAN
ATi Radeon 9700 PRO
Corsair 512MB 333MHz (PC2700) CAS2 DDR (CMX512-2700C2)
KT400 board (to be decided after the THG review)

Do you think waiting for the 166 FSB XP's is worth it?
I don't know..

is the nForce2 mobo better than KT400 boards?
We'll see it in future reviews, won't we?

166Mhz FSB will be really cool. But i'm not sure that it will be available in October. If yes, then better go for it, i'm sure it's worth of it's money. No comment about nForce..

I'm sure there are some people who will likely comment about nForce, but i hate nVidia like Intel. So i'm not interested in theier products. That's why..

No one knows how it competes with the KT400?
In terms of performance, it should be better than KT400. Although there is not nForce2 and KT400 boards, it's hard to tell that KT400 will trail behind.

In terms of features, no chipset will be able to beat nForce2. AGP 8X, Dual Channel DDR 400 memory interface, USB 2.0, Firewire, Dual 10/100 ethernet, an extremely powerful Audio processing unit all are integrated in nForce2. The integrated graphics version of nForce2 will have built in GeForce4 MX.

N.B. : It's really worth to wait for nForce2.

I had a 3DFX VooDoo Banshee 16MB PCI Card....had it in my Celeron 300A @ 450 system.....even ran Windows XP with it...good thing theres still people out there that love 3DFX..otherwise i would have never found drivers for the card for XP.......3rd party support for 3DFX is AWESOME......as for the boot screen b4 games.....i loved that thing too..it was sooo cool......heh heh

It was a sad day for em when a friend of mien wilingly traded that card for a Diamond Viper V770 TNT2 32MB Card......i was happy with that card too.....oh well......

Just a tip, since you're splurging on the stuff, I'd suggest you go Intel and overclock. The XP2200+ will hold back that card. Maybe a 2.26B/2.4B and o/c to 3GHz. Then a 845PE chipset mobo, so you get official DDR333 support (will be out by then).

good thing theres still people out there that love 3DFX
Are there any gamer who cannot like 3dfx?! 😱 It was the pionerr, and had make a huge revolution in gaming. We all need to thank 3dfx.

BTW there are 15 posts now, but i still didn't received a answer for my question. Please someone speak about the subject!

It could be just cause the technology now takes more money to research and all. Also, maybe they realized a consumer would pay up more to get a top end card.

Hýmm, i disagree. Do you believe that finding R9700 is harder than finding Voodoo? I don't think so.

Well, the technology associated with the production and researching of these computer parts is much more advanced than back a few years. So, as when in 1999, it took a long time, now you can get it done faster, but you'll have to pay more. Also, a small part could be due to higher wages of the researchers, especially in this field.
