Water cooling temps are the same as air cooled temps?

Hey guys i just reinstalled my water cooling loop.
My XSPC X20 750 res/pump combo died about a year ago
and I decided to get back in the water cooling game with the
XSPC Photon 170 and a separate D5 Swiftech MCP655 pump which I
purchased from performance-pcs.com


So I installed my loop and notice
that i'm getting around the 39-42C for the
CPU temp on idle which was around the same temps I was getting on air cooling

Did I do something wrong?
Do I need a better CPU block or bigger radiator?
My main goal is to over clock this CPU

Any suggestions to improve temps please let me know.
BTW my room temp is around 80F or 26.6C



Case: Corsair 600T
CPU Intel i7-2600K
GPU: Nvidia GTX 1080
RAM: Corsair Venegeance (4x4GB) 16GB
PSU: Cooler Master V1000 80 Gold

Water cooling parts:
XSPC Raystorm 750 EX240 Extreme Kit
CPU Block: XSPC Raystorm CPU block
Radiator: XSPC EX240 240mm radiator
Pump: Swiftech MCP655-B D5 pump with speed control.
Reservoir: XSPC Photon 170 tube reservoir

the difference between water cooling and air cooling is not apparent at idle,when heat exchange is governed by physics of thermal transfer,not the efficiency of the design.The improvement will most likely only be visible when you start heating up the loop.

Yep, you want to compare your load temps, not idle temps.

I think i'm having an issues with my D5 pumps temps are getting crazy up to 80C on idle. I don't feel the pump vibrating

Seems like there have been a few 'my D5 isn't working' threads lately. Can you post a photo of your loop?

Was it working before?
How is it connected to power?

Yes the pump was working before like about 4 hours after I installed it. Its brand new. This is my second pump that stopped working on me within 2 weeks.
It is connected to my PSU via molex cable

D5's shouldn't just stop working - they are typically quite robust units. The one I have is around 7 years old and still works, although it isn't my daily driver, but it was for at least 6 years.

So I heard.. Well I don't feel the motor vibrating on my Swiftech Pump. This is my second one this month.. What could be wrong?

That's difficult to say for certain. Does the pump run dry at any point? Even if so, I would expect the pump to still run or make noise. Is there an issue with the molex connector coming loose or anything of the sort? You also mentioned it was the D5-b - does it have a PWM cable or is the speed control portion hooked up to anything? If so, can it be disabled to run full speed instead? Wondering if there is PWM enabled but for some reason, the PWM control is disabled or no longer sending a signal?

No I have the pump directly below my reservoir.
I suspected an issue with the molex connector but it's hard to tell. I attached it to a working molex cable on my PSU.. The reason I know the molex cable on my PSU is working is I attached an LED light to it and the Led light lit up blue.
I have a Swiftech MCP655-B pump so it only has one cable which is a red and black molex. I have the one with the speed controller on the back of the pump.

Something strange did happened tho. When I installed the pump and was doing a bleed test I had a 24-pin jumper attached to the MOBO connector it was running for a couple of minutes. I went back to check on it then it stopped running.
I suspected that the pump was busted again so I hooked back up my 24-pin connected to my MOBO and connected back up my CPU and then the pump was working again. Strangest thing? Don't you think?

Your setup looks like it's pretty orderly. One thing to note with jumpering power supplies is that some units can actually trip and turn off if they sense an incorrect short but I don't know if this is the case with yours or not.

Has the pump worked since then or does it ever work intermittently?

It hasn't worked since Friday. I tried jumping it and it didn't not work. So I also connected my PSU to my motherboard and CPU and my fans and the pump still didn't not work

So, is the PSU not working correctly or only the pump? The way I originally read this is that your PC boots and functions but the pump does not and your temps rise. The way I am reading this is that your PSU is reconnected and the PC components might not be working?

No all my PC components work. Just the pump does not work

That is rather odd and I cannot really explain it...if the molex connection is fine with other components but not the pump, then I suspect the pump has failed in some manner. I've seen some people that had poor molex connectors on the pump side where the pins actually got push in from connecting the male/female molex connectors (I've actually seen that on some fans w/molex as well)

If that isn't an issue - it sounds like the pump has just failed...I don't know what would cause this since D5's are quite robust, and also I find it interesting that you've had 2 separate pumps die within a short period of time, so it makes me think there is another environmental problem causing this. One dead pump...possible, but 2 dead pumps within 2 weeks? Something is going on. Both D5's?

I'm assuming that you had good flow and you mentioned good temps at one point...when both pumps have worked, is this the case?

Yes I have about 39-40C temps when the pump was 'working' (I felt the motor actually moving and shaking) on idle and ~58C-63 on load with Prime 95. I find it fishy too that two of the pumps will go bad so quickly in a short time.
Is there a sure way I can test the pump? Or check for clogs?

Ok I just unplugged everything from my PSU except the pump via molex, a LED light and the MOBO to the jumper. I felt the pump and it is a faint "tink" sound coming from it every 5 secs. The sound is similar to a drop of water hitting a kitchen sink.

Did you rinse and flush your system well before reinstalling it all? Are you properly bleeding the system so the pump isn't running dry at any point?

The issue is that the pump isn't running at all. He's purchased 2 new D5's and they both quit working.

That's why I asked if they ran dry during his bleeding. Could have burned the pumps up. Or if there was a lot of debris in his system from sitting over time could that not clog and damage the pump?

Yes I rinse the system with distilled water.. Plus with the second pump I rinsed it. Filled the loop with distilled water and drained it. Then put in the white coolant

I just contacted performance-pcs.com and asked them to replace the defective pump with a custom G1/4" fitting one with the speed controller. I hope that one works out for me. So I am on air-cooling until I get my new pump.

Hopefully. I'm flushing my system with the system prep acid stuff. Then flush that out with distilled water, then fill the loop with the final colored liquid.

What is the system prep acid stuff you are using? and what brand of parts are you using in your water cooling loop?
