Hey all,
My buddy split water in the top of his case a couple months ago. He instantly turned it on to see if it still worked - i know.. - and it did! It fully booted and the only noticeable issue was red pixels (they act like dead pixels, just certain pixels are red now and don't seem to move).
The first thing we tested was the GPU. Two seperate GPUs resulted in the red dots, so we ruled that out.
Then, we wanted to test the Mobo. So we bought the newer version of his current board, installed it (hopefully improperly?) and gave it a go. I read in the manual that DDR3_A2 and _B2 were first priority with A1 and B1 second priority. That table in the manual seemed off but whatever. Put a RAM stick in A2 and B2 and gave it a go.
On first startup, fans started spinning but no signal was being sent from the Mobo nor the GPU to the monitor (TV in this case since I wanted to use an HDMI instead of his weird VGA-to-DVI adaptor setup with old Gateway monitor; could connect ). I decided to switch the port the RAM was in; I took out both sticks and put a single stick in A1 with nothing in any other ports. It booted and the Boot Options screen came up and offered the "Repair Your Computer" option. I went with that and it ran for about 20 minutes then told me to restart again. On second boot, I decided to Run Windows Normally and it got past to the Windows 7 "Loading Windows" bar, and then just sat on a black screen with mouse with no further loading seeming to happen. [I THOUGHT I MIGHT HAVE SEEN SOME RED PIXELS ON THIS SCREEN, BUT I'M NOT COMPLETELY SURE.] Multiple reboots and following tips from other forums have not helped anything.
So I'm not really sure what to do from here. It doesn't seem to be GPU or Mobo damage. I think it could be a Windows thing with HDD damage - a Reddit user thought it could be CPU damage.
Could it be that originally there were two sticks of RAM on the Mobo and I only used one to boot? I really doubt it but i'm just grasping at anything now. If it comes down to CPU damage, there's no way he'll be replacing it as it's a bit expensive. If it's HDD related, that's a pretty easy fix but I didn't want to keep his machine to wipe/format the hard drive and install a new copy of Windows.
Thanks for any help!
