what a big bad news for today , WD r crap , they r the one who should been acquire by other company , most of the laptop or desktop pack with WD blue die after 2~3 years ...... no more hitachi means i hv to go back on seagate again ...... i still can't believe on samsung yet , where can i get a toshiba ? what about fujitsu then ?

IBM Deskstar was called DeathStar, because of their failure rate. Hitachi took over IBM hard drives. To help give it a better name. It worked. They are good solid hard drives on the cutting edge first t0 1 TB first to 2TB at 7200 RPMS. Remember the getting perepidicular tech. Anti-Trust issues, however nobody will cares about that any more as markets are in chaos state.

What has me puzzled is what has happened to hybrid hard drives. Hybrid drives with a large normal drive and a smaller flash drive combined. They were promised as being the next big thing a couple of years ago but never materialized on the market.

Well with bad taste and many complaints from seagate owners and after buying two 1tb wd blues I splurged and bought two Hitachi 1tb drives two months ago. Holding up good, I hope that I still have warranty :s

What standard corporate crap:
"The acquisition of Hitachi GST is a unique opportunity for WD to create further value for our customers, stockholders, employees, suppliers and the communities in which we operate," said John Coyne,

What it really means. One less competitor on the market, nothing more. Really, what can Hitachi give to WD? What, HD technology?! For certain, the Hitachi brand of Hard Drives will go away. How long did Maxtor or Quantum live?

PS: No, Hitachi was NOT known for the Deathstar drives. They were owned by IBM when they had the high failure rate with the DEATHSTARS. Then IBM sold their factories and tech to Hitachi. Back in the day, Diskstars were among th best.

hdd failure rate
- Maxtor 1.04% (against 1.73%)
- Western Digital 1.45% (against 0.99%)
- Seagate 2.13% (against 2.58%)
- Samsung 2.47% (against 1.93%)
- Hitachi 3.39% (against 0.92%)

for 1TB drives:
- 5.76% Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.B
- 5.20% Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.C
- 3.68% Seagate Barracuda 7200.11
- 3.37%: Samsung SpinPoint F1
- 2.51% Seagate Barracuda 7200.12
- 2.37%: WD Caviar Green WD10EARS
- 2.10% Seagate Barracuda LP
- 1.57%: Samsung SpinPoint F3
- 1.55%: WD Caviar Green WD10EADS
- 1.35%: WD Caviar Black WD1001FALS
- 1.24%: Maxtor DiamondMax 23

for 2TB
- 9.71%: WD Caviar Black WD2001FASS
- 6.87% Hitachi Deskstar 7K2000
- 4.83%: WD Caviar Green WD20EARS
- 4.35% Seagate Barracuda LP
- 4.17%: Samsung EcoGreen F3
- 2.90%: WD Caviar Green WD20EADS

for SSD
- Intel 0.59%
- Corsair 2.17%
- Crucial 2.25%
- Kingston 2.39%
- OCZ 2.93%

source from hardware.fr

conclusion:
1. hitachi drives have the highest failure rate.
2. hdd with more than 2tb (which mean using 3 or 4 platters) will rise failure rate
3. 1 or 2 platter max for the best reliability

i hope WD can maintain their quality, if they start producting hitachi drives with WD labor it will be worst

never used Hitachi but have used WD and 2 times the drives gave up but first was a external drive and it got damaged due to my fault but still WD gave a replacement drive with added 80 GB space(160GB in RMA of 80 GB) second time i order a new Caviar Green 1.5 TB drive from an online store and they sent me a damaged piece but again WD come to rescue me and sent me 2 TB drive in RMA. so i feel lucky with WD.

I've had a few drives over the years and failures from diffrent companies. its hard to tell who has a lower failure rate, some times it does come down to luck and being at the right end of the bell-curve

Wow, fanboy much?

WD bought them out because they were a viable target, yes. But what does this mean to anyone? Hiatachi had decent drives, and any tech Hitachi had that might benefit WD will be used. Also WD will more than likely retool the Hiatachi factories so they improve their quality to WD's levels which is only even better news for people that want a reliable hard drive.

[citation][nom]zman977[/nom]In my opinion, Western Digital should of acquired a company that makes SSD memory so they could better compete in the SDD market... Just my 2 cents though.[/citation]

[citation][nom]tpi2007[/nom]This makes some sense, but... has WD also bought some SSD maker too ? They should be...[/citation]

For those wondering about Western Digital increasing their strategy in the SSD market, check out the full press release they issued on their website - http://www.wdc.com/en/company/pressroom/releases.aspx?release=ba433e4b-bff8-4d99-b60f-7f02aa42f444.

"About Hitachi Global Storage Technologies
Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Hitachi GST) develops advanced hard disk drives, enterprise-class solid state drives..."

[citation][nom]dormantreign[/nom]NOOOOOOO!!!!I hate Hitachi and Love WD!How could they do this to me![/citation]

In a press conference, Western Digital executive Darth Vader was quoted, "We have obtained the DeathStar technology."

omg ... WD was just a crap , how could it do this to us , they should drop their WD brand and change to WC (Western Crap) ... so now no more hitachi HDD that i can trust , and toshiba didn't hv the 3.5" HDD for us , samsung still need to spend more money for R&D on their HDD line but they r focus on SSD now , so guess that back to the seagate drive for 3.5" HDD is the only choice now ......

Seagate were the premier HDD makers way back at the start, WD is top of the heap now. All the pissing and moaning in the world wont change that fact.
Every Hitachi I ever had was a noisy POC that failed quickly, they are garbage drives that the OEMs can buy cheap and stuff in a case.
I have seen WD drives run for 7-10 years before failure, and on a 1-3 year warranty thats pretty damn good.
But I also understand and keep in mind that ANY HDD can fail, nothing is 100% and never will be!!
I buy WD, simple as that, they rarely die early, and they can take alot of hell! Had one in a hand built system that survived the MB going up in smoke....very impressive!

negative ...... WD made crappy drive more , it cause some of the data lost without a warning , and the blue drive get bad sector within a year , dead after 2~3 years , the green drive not any better , only the black drive had less problem , and they can't compete in enterprise drive with hitachi and seagate , and the mobile drive hv toshiba and hitachi on top , they are real garbage drive , they should change their name to WC or WG (western crap or western garbage) , they shipping out more rite now just because they sell it cheap like a garbage , if not seagate will be on top , but still hitachi makes good drive , and now it is only in the memory , maybe should go get some hitachi drive for keep as a remind ......

Hitachi drives were the only ones I've ever owned, that have never failed on me. I had a thing for Hitachi drives...it's a shame.

Either way, I'm glad WD bought them. I can't stand Seagate after 3 failures in 3 months.

Buying up the competition is fine. WD already makes the best HDD. I would rate Hitachis as 2 from a reliability standpoint.

The thing that scares me about WD is their lack of focus on the mainstream SSD market (or any SSD market in general). They have been a great company of which you could always rely on them to produce great performing reliable drives over the years. I would hate for a company with this kind of integrity not to exist in the SSD market.
