Can any one help me? i want information about WD hard disk....if wd hard disk is directly sold to customer then it comes under 5 yrs warranty but if it is sold to companies like zenith then does it come under 1 yr warranty?? i have 6yr old zenith pc without assembly & my hdd is wd by zenith which is not working.. so seller told me that warranty is expired (1yr) as it comes under zenith. He told me to type serial number on wd website support & if they are showing status 'unknown' then clearly it means wd is sold to vendor company (eg zenith)

Solution
They could have bought them not as an OEM then giving you the full warrenty. but if it was Dell HP etc (the big guys) it would be the same warranty that comes with the PC and if you tried to put in the serial it would say you need to contact where you bought the PC
Yes. If a hard drive is sold though an OEM PC Builder ALL those serial numbers can not be warrantied though the HDD maker and much go though the PC Builder like Dell or HP etc.

Also ONLY the WD Black drives have 5 year warranties (as far as consumer drives go). Then the rest have either 2 or 3 year warranties.

and honestly after 6 years i wouldn't expect any one to warranty it. Hard drives have an average (Even though most I know of last longer) of 3-5 years with so much data being written to them everyday. I have drives that are 10+ years old and have been on 24/7 and have no issues or sign of even slow down. but then I have had drives die after a month or also being DOA. Just the other day I had a hard drive fail in a clients PC that is only a little over a year old.

@drtweak .. I typed my wd hdd serial number on theri website & its already been expired (5yrs) ..so do i have to assume whether it was sold directly to de customer like computer seller instead of dell or zenith???

Hey there, @thisispas!

OEM hard drives are sold to OEM computer manufacturers or distributors in bulk packaging, as @drtweak mentioned. These hard drives usually don't contain a warranty from Western Digital because when we sell HDDs to OEM manufacturers such as Dell, Compaq, Apple, Zenith (in your case), etc., they are sold without any accessories, installation software or warranty. Afterwards, the OEM computer manufacturer would usually include the hard drive under the warranty of the computer system that the hard drive was installed into. If you want more information about the HDD warranties we provide, please check our Warranty Policy for details.

Keep us posted if you have more questions, though. Good luck! :)
