WD 1TB My Passport Ultra 1TB is not recognized and affects the operations of other programs when connected to my PC. My OS is W7. In My Computer the Passport Drive does not show up. It does appear in Device Manager as working and I tried to update drivers and got the message that the latest are installed. When I look for the drive in Device Manager not only does it not appear but no other drive including C appear. In reading other closed articles on this site I found out that I should buy a new cable and try that first. The drive when plugged in lights up and I can hear the drive quietly spinning away no unusual noises. I have tried it in another PC and 4 different USB ports. Hopefully the new cable will solve the problem. Any thoughts or ideas will be appreciated, thank you.

Hey there, menauhant.

Sorry to hear about the problems you're having with your HDD.

Do you have any data which you need to recover from the drive? Would you please post screenshots of what you see in Disk Management and Device Manager while you have the drive connected? Here's how to do it: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/faq/id-2176231/guide-posting-screenshot-forum.html.

Trying out the HDD with a different USB cable is a really good idea. Hopefully everything works fine and it turns out to be just a faulty cable. However, if you're still having issues with it, I'd suggest that you download DLG and check the drive's SMART status to see if anything out of the ordinary pops-up: Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows.

Please let me know how it goes.

I ran the DLG with the old cable. DLG searched for drives and did not find the WD HDD. As soon as I disconected the drive DLG instantly displayed my C Drive. Retried this again, nothing until I diconnected the WD HDD then DLG displaded C, E and G (but only for a second). I tried the screen shots and saved 4 of them to my desk top when I opened them they all displayed In Valid Image. The 4 shots were one from Computer, Printers and Devices, Device Manager and Disk Management. The WD HDD appeared in the Computer, Printers and Devices, Device Manager but no devices showed up in Disk Management.

I will retry this when I receive the new cable.

Received the new cable today and got the same results. Looks like it is time to give up and pay to have my data retrieved. I am guessing this is going to cost me $500. Another costly lesson learned! Any suggestions?

That's really unfortunate. 🙁

In terms of data recovery, you could try accessing it via Ubuntu Live USB/DVD, to see if that OS is capable of recognizing the partitions properly. Another option would be data recovery software: https://www.lifewire.com/free-data-recovery-software-tools-2622893.
And if none of that works for you, perhaps you should go really for a professional solution, such as a data recovery company: WD Data Recovery.

Boggieman_WD thank you for all of your suggestions. I tried the lifewire and it could not find the drive. I have run out of time and things to try and am now shipping the drive to Gillware for Data Recovery.

Had the same issue. Turns out the drive was partitioned at some point.

Went to Disk Management and found Disk1 removed the partition (be very careful, this might delete some important files). I did not try to retrieve data, but instead formatted right away. However, before being asked to format the disk, I could have stopped at the removing partition.

Once I removed partition, I was able to access the drive and format it. After the format, I am now using the external drive as storage once again.

Alvin23, something similar happened to me; removed the itty bitty partition, and the drive opened up. Now, meanwhile, menauhant, do you recall that this HD possibly had its DriveLock in play? And that its on-board/circuit level encryption was also in play? I hope the data recovery place can get the encrypted files back. I'm that HD's circuit board will do its thing.
