On may 2012 i bought a lacie thunderbolt 2big raid 4TB (2+2), used it as main data archive / backup in raid 1 mirroring, and this month one of the 2 disks failed (beeps so i guess it is a hardware problem - maybe the head). The working unit is readable so there is no data loss, and i had a second backup anyway. Disks are seagate barracuda 2TB st2000dm001 for your reference.
The unit is under base warranty, plus i extended it with gold care so it is under warranty till 2015; i contacted Lacie and they promptly gave me info on returning the drive.
Now my dilemma is wether return the failing drive, which contains all my data + backup (sigh), while i know they destroy and overwrite data in case of regeneration, or destroy it myself and buy more reliable disks, like the WD red series which is more suited for a RAID use. I red the specs and the wd red should be compatible, as they consume less power and spin slower; but i haven't found any official or unofficial confirmation (Lacie doesn't appear in WD red compatibility list).
If i buy the disks myself, i have to remove the warranty seals from the disks racks so i guess i will also loose the warranty. Anyone knows if the WD red will work in the unit, or has any tip to share? Thanks
