External hard drive issue. needs to be partitioned how do I do this?... help

I just want to make a backup for important docs but did not know I had to partition an external hard drive to do so
WD Ultra External hard drive is what I am dealing with. Newbie here.

Use Disk Management. It will probably ask you if you want to initialize the drive now when you launch it.
Otherwise just right click the drive in the DM window and select initialize.

if you will be using this in other systems, that dont run windows, then set the format type to ExFat otherwise NTFS is fine.
