Good evening, THC. I recently purchased a WD SSHD (WD10S21X-24R1BT0). The drive works perfectly on the HDD side, but the SSD side isn't showing at all. WD says that in order to use the SSD part of the drive, you have to install a program from them called WD Boost. When I try to install it, it give an error saying "Unable to find a WD SSHD..error#0". In the WD Q&A, it suggests to use a Sata Data cable to the mobo (motherboard). Another forum says to create a partition so Windows can see the 8GB drive. I don't see if the sata solution can be done on a laptop. & the partition solution didn't work at all. I understand that these particular drives are OEM'd to Leveno Y50 laptops. WD doesn't have firmware for these drives. Does anyone have a drive that's working perfectly? & if so, how did you get the SSD side to work? The whole drive shows up in BIOS & in Device Manager, but only the HDD side shows up in Windows. Is there any way I can get the SSD side to 1) show up in windows, & 2) work with the WD Boost. I also understand that the SSD is just a cache & you can't manage it. That's fine with me. I just want it to work. I'll give you my specs:

OS: Windows 8.1 64-Bit
PC: Toshiba Satellite C55-B5299
Drive: WD10S21X-24R1BT0-SSHD-8GB
Chipset: Intel Celeron N/J Series (AHCI)
RAM: 8GBs
Storage Driver: Microsoft Storage Spaces Controller

So that's the basics..Oh! In the Disk Manager, it read like this: 1) Recovery 1GB 2) EFI System 100MBs 3) OS (C:) 921.68GBs & 4) Recovery 8.61GBs..In the My Computer, it reads one whole drive OS (C:) 921.68GB..So again, if anyone can help me, please reach out. Thank you in advance. Peace & God bless you & yours.

Solution
Welcome to the community, A-Weapons!

I'm sorry to hear about your issues with the WD drive! 🙁 Unfortunately, I'm not able to find more information on our website concerning your model. Everything that actually pops up is leading me to the conclusion that it's not actually a hybrid WD drive.
I'd still strongly recommend you to contact our customer support and hopefully their data base can give us more info about the HDD model. Either way, I'd suggest you to try testing the drive using WD's Data LifeGuard and check up on the health status, the utility will also give you the model number & serial number of the drive. This way it'd be easier for you to check its warranty on our website and provide more details to our customer support.
Link to the available WD software (look for Data LifeGuard Diagnostics): http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=nzkvVT
WD Support contacts: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=8L33VB
Warranty check: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=84IYRf

I escalated your thread to my superiors, so I will keep you posted when they respond!
Hope this helps though.

Well?? I've done everything as far as contacting WD, giving my serial & model no#'s, & running DIOS on the drive. I doubt that WD would allow a fake SSHD to be marketed. Now I DO believe they MAY have dropped the ball & just want to sweep this "under the rug". All they have to do is come up with a WD Boost that will work on any AHCI platform..(or RAID)..SSWD, I've so far ran into 12 other people with the exact same problem I have..(The WD Boost Issue, the Partitions, etc). I mean IDENTICAL..(so this is NOT just me). WD needs to start making firmware updates for THESE drives, & allow WD Boost to work. IT DOESN'T WORK RIGHT NOW!! (laughing). As I mentioned earlier, I don't want to manage the 8GB SDD. I just want it working the way it's intended to work (The 8GB SSD works as a cache..The WD Boost software is THEN installed in Windows..It's a program, not a firmware update. So the "Sata Trick" won't work. & the Partition making won't work either because the SSD side needs a driver to activate it: which by the way the program with the driver for it can't see it). WD has KIND OF stepped in it this time (& none of us are perfect). Why can't they just make a firmware (or software) that actually will work. Happy Customers, Happy Company. WD advertises this drive, (& BTW: it (the WD10S21X) IS on the site). It's just sketchy information about it (which means to me WD is trying to separate itself from the drive). & this includes the WC10J31X. They're trying to push the dual drives now. & the desktop SSHD's. (shaking my head) Why can't WD just make the driver that'll work on all PC's? Well thank you all again. I hope that WD does find a resolution for this. (The WD Black2's are still too expensive for the average consumer. So they need to make a driver that actually works). Peace & God bless..

Hellot here again, A-Weapons!

Again, I'm sorry about your bad experience with WD so far. 🙁 Well, the WD10S21X is valid drive, indeed. However, it was primarily sold to OEMs and it's considered an old model. The drive uses mSATA or edge connector and that might cause some compatibility issues with most consumer devices. Either way, as I mentioned, I'd keep you posted with further information about the model's functionality and hopefully together we'll get to the bottom of this issue.

Hope you can be patient with me here! 😀

I'm on the same boat. This hard drive came with my Lenovo Y50-70 Touch, purchased July this year, and I've been having issues since I first booted it.
As I've purchased it from another country, I don't have the receipt anymore, thus I believe the warranty is off question.

The WD10S21X drive had some serious issues with something, being remarkably terrible with random read/write operations, and sometimes even sequential. It also heats up considerably, being too hot for the touch when exposed, and heating my laptop palm rest more than my processor does when inside the laptop.
It did get better when I did a special format, by filling it with zeroes at the first run, then filling it with ones on the second run (unfortunately, wiping clear the Lenovo partitions). Benchmarks and tests gave me much better results after that, but unfortunately random read is still a big issue with this drive, and it still heats up too much.

Here are some tests with a third-party tool called HD Tune:
http://imgur.com/a/0RqHg

Most of the numbers are alright and acceptable, but "Burst Rate". Most drives score 150+MB/s, while this one can barely scratch 1/6 of it, and this number represents an random access, such as opening a file or folder from the first time. About 80% of your usual usage. SMART data reports the drive as healthy. HD Tune and other tools also report it as a perfectly working drive, by its own reports.

I don't know if it's caused by a faulty SSD or a firmware issue, but I'd love to count on the quality of WD to an resolution for this.

GT..thank you for writing on this forum. Since last week I've discovered a couple of things. 1) MOST drivers of older PCs will need updated Intel/AMD chipset drivers. I got some drivers from Fernando & the drive is NOW showing up as an accelerated SSHD drive. The speed is decent, & the drive is doing what it's supposed to do w/o the WD Boost. It starts slow, but whatever you use the most becomes like 10 times faster. I went and bought the WD Black2 drive. I haven't tried it yet, but it's the only option other than an SSD drive. I got the WD10S31X, & I can't wait to try it out (laughing). So check out Fernado's drivers if you get a sec. They're pretty good. The 14.3 version worked. The 12.7 version is good too, but the SSHD still shows up as a regular drive. But still, it doesn't show up as a 6GB transfer rate. It only shows a 3.0GB. The drive DOES heat up, but it's a little warm now. It runs like a motor though (laughing). So the drive works with the right Intel drivers. (well it works anyways..but better with those drivers. (thinking). Don't these drives comes with your laptop OEM? so I just don't get why WD would do that knowing that these drives are trouble. I also bought a Seagate joint. They say that THESE drives don't need anything "special", they just run. So I'll keep you posted on the drives. (I also want the WD10S12X..that one (the 12X) has the 16GB Nano drive instead of the 8GB in the 21X). Alrght. I'm gone. I'll keep in touch. Peace. & God bless.

Solution
Hey there again, guys!

Sorry for the late reply and thanks for your patience, A-Weapons!
Indeed this particular drive requires a driver from Intel/AMD or some other manufacturer in order to work properly, otherwise it might show with errors in Device Manager as well.
Unfortunately, these drives were originally sold only to OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) and thus they may not contain a warranty from Western Digital. When we sell drives to OEM computer manufacturers, we sell them without warranty. The OEM computer manufacturer would include the hard drive under warranty of the system the HDD was installed into. All of this you can find in the Warranty Policy on our website here: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=9Hc7PZ

Either way, I believe you should be able to get the drive properly detected once you find out what is the original computer system that it was sold from.

Cheers,

hey A-wepons ,
I have the same drive and alo facing same problem you said you found the problem can you mail me the soln. or post it plz I realy need it..plz man help me..gautampayne@gmail.com

I have also a Y50 with the same drive. I bought in december 2015 from lenovo. If you have the right drivers can you send to me? Giorgio_i@wp.pl
More then one month l try to get work WD boost and my serial number is not recognized by WD because OEM.. So if somebody have solutionplease send to me:bounce:

Giorgio..(looking puzzled)..1) I'm sorry that it took me so long to reply to you. (I RARELY look at mail unless I'm waiting for something important)..so sorry about that..& 2) I don't recall saying that the drivers for the Y50 DOES work..(laughing & shaking my head)..WD messed up on these..& that's why they're SLOWLY sweeping these under the rug..(even now??!! they're sweeping the WD Black2s under the rug..I've never tried any of those..to be honest..the hybrids from Samsung & Toshiba & Seagate are better..& less noise..basically..WD ASSumed that the buyer would just use to PC..& not look into the driver..TO THIS DAY: & this will make 4 months..they haven't given a Brother ONE solution..not even a write back..if you have an ACHI PC..use the Fernando drivers (v.12.7 or higher)..the SSHD does pretty good with this..NOW WE'RE TALKING INTEL..LOL..for the people with NVidia/AMD..this is NOT for you..(laughing)..but Giorgio..seriously speaking..just go to Fernando's site & d/l the Intel RST drivers..you'll then see the speed of the SSHDs..umm..remember.the 8GB Nano is only for gathering data..it's not to be used for storage..well?? it CAN'T be used for storage..(laughing)..anyhows..that's pretty much it..if a Brother finds anything else out that's helpful..i'll give you a shoutout..thank you 4 stopping by..Peace..& God bless..

Hi A-Weapons ,
I tryed to lookfor Ferando drives but I get error during install. I download the 64bit from http://www.win-raid.com/t2f23-Intel-RST-RSTe-Drivers-newest-v-WHQL-v-WHQL.html but No way to install it.
I run windows 10 pro 64 bit, may be is not supported but I tryed running it also with compatibility option and start installation but give error.
Any Idea where I can found this Fernando drivers?

My PC is Lenovo Y50 with NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX and Intel core i7.
Thanks again for help.

hmm..(thinking)..Giorgio..I've used those drivers on 3 different PCs..(including an XP HE 32Bit)..it ran flawlessly..i DID get an error with the OEM Toshiba..(those, along with yours, need SPECIFIC drivers)..I even put them in my Dell (Win7 64Bit) and it did fine..Win-Raid is Fernando & you went to the right place..I'm inserting this URL: http://www.win-raid.com/u1_Fernando.html these are the universal set for Win7 and up..(they are for 32/64)..let me know if these work..(like I said..they worked fine..EXCEPT THE TOSHIBA..LOL..that PC wanted NO parts of those drivers)..LOL..(thinking)..it COULD be (your PC) a Toshiba situation..(some OEMs won't let you do squat)..LOL..Oh!! & make SURE that your BIOS is set to ACHI..(not RAID & not IDE)..I made that mistake with my XP..LOL..once you've done THAT..then (thinking)..no..insert your AHCI driver 1st..THEN (if you haven't done it already) switch your SATA mode to AHCI..again..thank you for writing to me..& I'm always here to help...Peace..& God bless..

A-Weapons..South Bronx, NYC..PS: what WILL work is if you use a GENERIC Microsoft Win7..i used a generic Win8.1 on my Toshiba & I could THEN use the Fernando drivers..& it did pretty good..(not great though)..now remember..we're talking about the WD SSHDs..the Toshibas, the Seagates, & the Samsungs did a great job..the WD's sound like a small motor starting up..(laughing)..but the others are a lot quiet..if you DO go THAT route..remember to go to the Intel (my bad, Leveno) site & d/l all of your necessary drivers..(e.g. display, sound, card reader, webcam, etc)..then you can use the AHCI drivers from Fernando..again..let me know what happens..

PS2: ok..i'm going to go STEP BY STEP on how I got it to work..now like I said..some OEMs won't allow you to do this..(e.g. my Toshiba Satellite c55-b5299)..when I changed the OS to a regular "plain-Jane" Windows 8.1. (non-OEM)..the drivers worked perfectly..Ok..here we go:

1) (& this is for my Toshiba with the non-OEM OS.also..a different HDD)..I first d/l'd the Fernando drivers..(I used the 12.7 ones)..I went to my device manager & looked up the ATA/IATAP controllers..(BTW: the BIOS was already preset to AHCI for SATA mode)..2) I saw the "Standard AHCI Drivers..3) I right-clicked it & chose "Update Driver"..you THEN choose "Have Disk"..from there..& I went to my Fernando driver (wherever i saved them at) & I picked out the driver that says AhCi.sys..(it'll look strange..but you'll know it when you see it)..I got warnings..but I went ahead & install it..once I got that installed..it told me to restart my computer..once I got BACK into Windows..i THEN installed the Rapid Storage Technology (IRST)..& I saw some difference in my speed..i opened up my IRST..& it showed my that my drive was 1) an SSHD..2) the model no#..& 3) that IRST was running the drive in advanced speed mode..so that's the breakdown of how I did it step by step..& again..this was with a NON-OEM OS..my Dell & my Gateway (XP) are OEMs..& they worked just fine..(with the XP..Fernando made special drivers for them)..I hope this helps you..if not..holler back at me..Peace..

Hi again,
BIOS is set ACHI and I succes installing 64bit Intel RSTe AHCI & RAID drivers v13.1.0.1058 WHQL. My Lenovo have an OEM disk and with this one driver I can finally see active the acceleration with the Intel Rapid Storage. WDBoost still not reconise the SSHD but its looks faster now. May be is enought that IRST see and enable it...
I did this:
I download one by one the Fernando's drivers and try to install them with the right click of the mouse and select "install". When I tryed the v13.1.0.1058 then it say INSTALLED SUCCESFULLY, so I restart the PC, launche the IRST and now the acceleration SSHD is active.
Then I tryed WDBoost but still give me error. BTW all look faster then before.
Thanks for help.

P.S. I not need to reinstall drivers from Lenovo site, right?

(thinking)..not at all..i was saying THAT (the reinstalling thing) if you'd used a plain (non-OEM) OS (e.g. Windows 10, Windows 8, etc)..my Toshiba Satellite C55-B5299 didn't want ANY parts of Fernando's drivers..but once I installed the plain version of W8.1 in it..the drivers worked flawlessly..BUT!!?? I had to go to the Toshiba website to d/l SOME of the drivers..(video, audio, bluetooth, etc)..but if you're NOT having trouble with ANY of your PC functions? then you may not have to..(&?? I was saying THAT if your PC wouldn't let you use the Fernando drivers & you switched your HDD to a non-OEM OS)..I AM happy that you got things poppin' with your PC..(smiling & sighing)..I just don't understand why on Earth WD just didn't make a driver that actually WORKS!! (laughing)..but anyhows..I just wanted to hit you back..(BTW) if you're going to answer me..put the REPLY option..(I didn't even see that you'd answered back..i thought about your earlier troubles..so I came back to make sure that you were doing ok..(smh)..again..I'm glad that you're doing ok with your PC..NOW!!?? I need to ask YOU something..HOW do you back up your BIOS? (laughing)..my Gateway PCs (both are GT5026E)..one has XP..(that's the one that's working with AHCI)..& then the other one I put in W7..the problem is the MoBo for one can do AHCI..the other one can't..it's locked..(stupid OEMs)..LOL..the BIOSES are ALMOST the same..& I can't find find anything to unlock the W7 BIOS..& I can't find the BIOS of my XP online..(or on Gateway)..maybe you MAY have some resources to help me..i'll give you some info:

Gateway GT5026E: BIOS that I need: NT94510J.15A.0099
BIOS that I do NOT need: NT94510J.15A.0109

now if I can find a BIOS that's 1) unlocked & 2) OEM-friendly (Intel has a BIOS that's NT94510J.86A that's unlocked..BUT!!?? you have to repeat putting in your COA)..PAIN IN THE BEHIND!! LOL..so if there's a MODDED one..i'll take it..even if you don't know..can you point me to someone who MAY be able to help me..i want my W7 to be able to run in AHCI mode..well thank you so much in advance..i'm glad that I could help..& hit me back whenever you feel like it..Peace..& God bless you & yours..

UPDATE: the WD Boost will NOT work with the WD10S21X or the WD10J31X..Western Digital has FINALLY admitted that the drives will NOT work..& will never HAVE worked..only 2 laptop drives & only one desktop drive works with WD Boost..one of the drives is the WD10S12X & the other is the WD10J13T..i actually had the 12X installed in one of my laptops & didn't remember/care/know it..LOL..anyhows..i saw that the 12X is suppose to be compatible with WD Boost..i say "what the heck"..LOL..i tried it..& to my surprise..it tired to install..BUT!!?? it gave me an error#24 (cache partition error)..i then went to my disk management..& saw that i had a 35GB partition with nothing in it..so i deleted (unallocated) the partition..& then reinstalled the WD Boost..& it went thru perfectly..once i rebooted..the speed was clearly noticeable..CLEARLY!! LOL..like 3-5 times faster upon loadup..& the Google Chrome pops up in less than 2 seconds..if you DO decide to get the drive..(well either one of the drives)..go to WD's website..& d/l the SSHD driver..(that's actually the newest version of WD Boost)..it worked for me..& now i'm a believer..LOL..if anyone has a question..free to contact me..Peace..& God bless..

g/m, Dray..umm..basically what I wrote to Giorgio is what I had to wind up doing..1) I'm sorry for overlooking your request..& 2) pretty much..the SSHDs from WD are messy at the least..& a clusterf**k at the most..for SOME reason..NO testing was done on these..the CLAIM was that the Leveno Y50s were OEM for the WD10S21X were indigenous to this PC..A LIE!! (laughing)..Giorgio proved that one..so i'll run through what I did..(read Giorgio's solution as well)..ok..1) make sure that you're running AHCI in BIOS..(IDE will NOT work for this)..d/l Fernando's drivers for AHCI/RAID..(I used 12.7..Giorgio used 13.1 I think)..go to your device manger..go to ATA/IAPTA drivers..update your AHCI driver first..here are the drivers:http://www.win-raid.com/u1_Fernando.html ok..back to what I was telling you..(laughing)..once you reboot your PC..you can THEN install the IRST (Rapid Storage Technology)..from there..you'll notice speed change..& faster reaction to your requests..again..i'm sorry that I didn't respond sooner..(OK!!?? a LOT sooner)..LOL..Oh!! if you have a NON-INTEL PC..(for example AMD/NVIDIA chipset)..then you can NOT use this method..holler back..peace..& God bless you & yours..

This is not a solution but an insight to a similar problem. I have not read every post because I'm feel like I'm going blind.
My previous post is below:
Western Digital HD Service Area Firmware Transfer

Hello, I am looking for a Service which will transfer
my Firmware from the Service Area on my HD
WD3200JB-00KFA0. I have read a couple of threads and
it appears that most do not know that if the PCB
board burns that you cannot simply transfer the
Firmware on a WD to another board. The link is below:
http://datacent.com/datarecovery/hdd/western_digital/WD...
I have tried to have the hd fixed with "Outsource
Data Recovery" which is a total waste of time and
money, whom I feel like reporting to the BBB. Next I
went to PCB Solutions who appear only to deal with
PCB board Firmware Transfers who have truly tried to
help but SA(service area) transfers are beyond their
scope. I hoping I won't have to eventually pay an
exorbitant recovery cost. I've bought a R-Driver USB
SATA IDE Cable to access the drive via USB. It clicks
a couple of times and unless I use the Sentinal,
UVCView.x86.exe, or RecoverMyFiles-Setup from Recover
My Files, the internal USB drive plugged in
externally will not show up. The HD shows identifies
in System as "WDC ROM MODEL-BUCCANER- USB Device" similar to the previous link from "datacent.com"
defines. I captured four screen images of the System
drives but how to attach them to this message is
beyond me. This is just a Firmware Transfer but not
from the PCB board but from the HD on a WD so the
Service which does this should be someplace.
WD customer service has said their is no help for
this flaw other than recovery services endorsed by
them and their HD has been not something which I will
be another customer. I stumbled on a blog of how
recovery services are nothing more than bilking the
corporate customer and if you happen to be a PC user
like me forget it.

(thinking) Hmm..Well 1st off Good Morning, Carmen. I'm sorry about what you're going through. To my knowledge, firmware isn't data. So you'll never be able to transfer a firmware update. FUs (firmware updates) are updates of the chip of its "BIOS". Any kind of transfer will have to be programmed in the PCB board. Remember: you can ONLY transfer data. It's like transferring data of a BIOS chip: you can't do it (well not in Windows). As far as any "solutions", there are none. I recommend, even though i know that you've tried this, is the find the FU that was originally on the source HDD. Like I said, you may know better & I'm assuming that you're not computer savvy, but just in case (laughing). To be candid, I've never heard of firmware transfers, just updates. I apologize for not being able to help, or not having anything productive to say. Good Luck on your search, Peace..& God bless you & yours.

Giorgio..long long long time no see..LOL..OK??!! i MAY have something for you..WD (Western Digital) has just released that the WD10S21X will NOT work with WD Boost..(neither will the 10J31X)..only the 12X & the WD10J13T will work with WD Boost..ASK ME HOW I KNOW!!?? LOL..Ok..i'll answer you..(laughing)..about 3 days ago i noticed that in ONE of my laptops..i had the 12X installed in one of my PCs..(i also have a couple of Toshibas laying around..& this one was a Satellite L505D LS5003..so yesterday..i said "what the heck?"..i tried the WD Boost..it got a whole lot further than when i tried it with my 21X..BUT!!?? it gave an error#24 (a non-cache partition error)..i went to my disk management & saw that i had a 35GB partition with nothing in it..i deleted (unallocated) the partition..ran the WD Boost..& BOOM..it installed..i rebooted my computer..& KABOOM!!..LOL..the speed difference was crazy..like 3-5 times faster..& i'm running Windows 7 SP1..8GBs of RAM..& i did some tweaking (MSCONFIG)..the drive only used 14Gbs for the WD Boost..so i put the rest of the space back to the OS partition..(extended the OS partition thru disk management)..so everything's beautiful with the WD Boost now that Western Digital admits that they messed up..LOL..so again..get the 10S12X or get the 10J13T..(there's another one..but i think that's a desktop drive)..you CAN remove the Recovery partition too?? but i wouldn't suggest it unless you've made an image of your HDD already..hit me back when you get a chance..Peace..& God bless..
