Solution
check with wd web site for bios updates for the drives. may have a firmware bug like seagates old bios bug on there 7200 drives. after a set time the drives firmware would go poof and the drive would show up in the bios but not in the os. a firmware fix fixed the bios of death issue for seagate drives.

Hi

I would un plug the 2 2 TB drives sata data cables at the hard disk end and connect to the 3 TB drives

I would also install WD data life guard for windows to test these drives if they are detected by bios and device manager

If this does not work you should at least get an error code to report to vendor or WD

I hope you have data backed up externally

I hope these drives are well spaced and have a fan cooling them as close packed stacks of drives have a habit of cooking them selves

i have done that multiple time also using multiple PCs none of which work
the HDDs are in the bios only... they do not make any appearance in disk management or any other software i have tried so far
the drives are spaced like so 1010101..... 1= drive 0=empty drive tray
i have used WD life guard and it doesnt see the drives
both drives are filled with movies music and game recordings(so data recovery is not an issue, but would make life easier if i didnt have to gain 6Tb of media all over again)

thanks for you input

how do i find any bios updates? or could you please post a link

thanks

Hi

I expect the bios or firmware update only works if the hard disk is working

Once the hard disk on board controller has crashed it is too late.

With seagate's I read about controlling the drive from a laptop with a serial port to write to an otherwise dead drive

Contact WD about the problem , they will know if this is a known & fixable problem or not
Not good publicity for them if they ignore users with a batch of dying hard drives

The drives are clearly dead and beyond repair or recovery by ordinary users

i was really hoping there would be a way to get them back up and running but ill try contact WD and the retailer i bought it from(being a pc warehouse im sure they can help if they have seen this before)
but if anyone else has any insight please let me know

and thanks for the advice mike
