What type of update was it? Cumulative? Do you know? Since you actually get version updates through windows update, what type of update it was could have a big effect.

how did you try to get to safe mode? F8 won't work, for example.
you can try to get there via installer
boot from installer, on 2nd screen after languages, choose repair this pc, not install
choose troubleshoot
choose advanced
choose start up options
hit the restart...

PC will restart and load safe mode
