Hello all,

A year ago I built my first PC and at the time I was only interested in web-browsing and YouTube etc with the occasional session on games like Shellshock Live, which aren't very intensive. I decided on an A10-7870k with 8GB of 2400Mhz Ram.

Since then, I have taken up photography as a hobby as well as shooting short videos for a blog @ 1080/60 which are around 10 minute videos which on my PC take around 25/30 mins to render. As I said, my PC does ok but it does get a little sluggish especially when using Lightroom and Photoshop together or when rendering 1:1 previews in bulk.

I am hoping to start taking many more photos now summer is approaching and in terms of video, that could go either way.

I'm heavily considering the i5 7600k as I mostly do photo work but I'm also considering the i7 6700k just in case I ever need to work on more complicated videos which again, may or may not happen. I'd be happy venturing into OC'ing a little because it looks interesting to me and some extra performance is always nice.

My CPU will be complemented with 16GB of 3000Mhz (or other?) RAM and an appropriate Z1/270 motherboard.

My dilemma is spending the extra money for the i7 now when I don't really need that power today but I might 12 months down the line and don't want to spend more money upgrading again.

I am of course aware of Ryen 5 coming soon but for now I'd like to focus just on the two (or anything else equally as good for less money)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: If i were to get the 7600k for example for lets say 70% photo 30% video, could I still get good results with that CPU and would it be a noticeable improvement in speed etc over my current APU? How much on top of the 7600K would the 6700k be in the above scenario considering the £100/150 price difference?

Hello there. I see your problem and my friend just went through this. Him and I both agree that a i5 7600k would be a great choice for video editing and watching. Amazon link: https://www.amazon.com/Intel-i5-7600K-Desktop-Processors-BX80677I57600K/dp/B01MRRPPQS/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1491109136&sr=1-1&keywords=i5+7600. I use this CPU for gaming but my friend uses it for editing video and he says its great. I'd say choose i7 if you want to go the extra mile but do remember that it has a 100/150 USD (93.77 Euro/140.65 Euro) price difference which from my perspective is too much if you are just editing video. I'd only say i7 for gaming, and video editing other wise I would stick to the 7600k. Also you have a z270 so overclock the i5 to the speed of the i7. Not sure what motherboard brand you are using other wise I would have given you a guide on how to overclock 😛. In basic words, Choose the i5 and pair it with a good GPU= Video editing PC. P.S 16 gb is fine but I'd choose 8gb because you only edit and watch videos. :)

Thanks for your response :) If you think the 7600k would be fine for my video editing needs, it should be very good for my photo editing needs as that is what I'll be doing most especially when compared to the APU I'm using now, am I right in thinking this? The reason I was asking about 16GB is because I usually have a lot of chrome tabs open when using lightroom and photoshop and the Ram usually sits around 90% - that and the fact the price difference is only £15, the money I'd save on the i5 I'd put towards the RAM. A GPU is on my list of things to buy but not as a priority, however, when the time comes, what would you recommend?

**EDIT** I read that for my needs, the i5 7600k combined with a RX460 4GB would be a nice upgrade for my needs?

So my graphics card *RX 480* does great with games and web browsing. I'm sorry for this late reply but the reason why this is late is because I gave my friend the 480 for a week and said it was great with video editing and photo editing. He rendered most videos in around 5 minutes. I'd say a 460 is fine but if you want to go the xtra mile go for a 480. I haven't tested 470 but i'm sure that can work well too. Also, you can use a 1060 which my friend was using and he says that is good for video editing as well and renders at about the same time. P.S both videos were at 4k i believe as my friend has said but im not sure. If you have any more questions, ask me. 😀
