[SOLVED] weird issues with dell e6430

I recently picked up a couple of dell e6430s from the reuse pile at a college. I have at least 3 other e6430s, 5 e6410s, 1 e6510, as 3 e6330s. (These are lent to non-profits for conventions - should those ever happen again.) So, I am somewhat familar with the product.

The machines came without memory, batteries, disks, or wifi cards. I booted the machines on w10 with some old 7200 rpm disks which had been replaced by SSDs, found some used batteries, bought the wifi cards, and found some old DDR3-1333 memory that replaced by DDR3-1600 in some of the other Dells I have.

Both machines are i5-2320. One has a manufacture date of 9/2012 and came with BIOS A02. The other has a manufacture date of 1/2013 and came with BIOS A09. Both BIOS have been updated to A24.

One of the machines was working fine.

The other machine would fail show the "sleep" option even though the BIOS settings were identical and the disks were clones of each other.

I figured I could live with that.

Then I bought some more DDR3-1600 4GB memories (4 of them).

The machine that would fail to show the "sleep" option shows the memory as 1333MHz still! The other machine shows it correctly at 1600MHz. I have swapped the memory back and forth - it is the machine and not the memory. I have even tried swapping some DDR3L-1600 memory from another machine with the same results.

(Note: looking up the machine in the Dell Service Database by Service Tag shows it did originally ship with DDR3-1600 memory.)

Is it possible that some of the early E6430s had a different motherboard? Any other ideas? I suspect I'm not going to be able to fix this but I'm more curious as to what the h... is going on.

are you sure that all laptops have the same CPU inside?

the i5-2XXXm is only supporting 1333MHz, the I5-3xxxm is supporting 1600MHz

isn´t an i3-2350m inside?

this might also be the issue with the sleep fault, if the clone has a different CPU inside

Ah, you are correct! The one the works is i5-3210 and the one that "fails" is i5-2520.
It is still weird in that the one that "fails" shipped with ddr3-1600 memory and I thought all E6430 supported ddr3-1600.
But, thank you for pointing out the obvious thing I was mssing.
