Weird USB problem...

Hi,

I've got an 81PE1000 Pro2 board and am trying to figure out the front
panel USB connectors (F_USB1/F_USB2)

The provided back panel connector works fine whichever socket (there
are two) I plug it into.

The front panel connector (two sets of four wires, unshielded, loosely twisted
and about 30cm or 12" long) seems to work fine with USB 1.1 spec devices
(mouse, USB floppy, USB 1.1 flash drive) but Windows XP reports an
unknown device whenever I plug a USB 2.0 flash drive into one of the front
panel sockets.

Presumably this represents either a wiring problem (ie: D+/D- exchanged)
or a signal propagation problem - noise, induction out of spec or some such.
The front panel connector wiring is provided by the ATX case manufacturer and
doesn't have a keyed connector at the mobo end, just individually labelled
connectors for each pin on the mobo. Can USB 1.1 survive an exchange of the
data signals? If not it presumably means I need to shorten or shield the cables. If
so it might be worth changing the parity of the data cables (memo to self: use
obsolete hardware for this test!)

Anyone got experience or knowledge on this?

Could be a problem with cheap cable. If the front port cable came
installed with your case, it is probably cheap to begin with and may
not be up to 2.0 specs.

it could be that the sockets on your motherboard for the front USB ports are
only USB1 ports and not USB2.0? ... I've seen a few boards where only the
sockets mounted direct onto the board at the rear of the machine are USB2.0.

no, it's not this. The connector on the mobo is USB 2.0 and works that
way when I plug the rear panel cable (supplied with the mobo) into it.

When I plug the front panel wires into the same connector, it only works
at USB 1.1 speed.

I can only conclude it is a cabling/wiring issue. Guess I'll try a shielded
USB 2.0 spec cable if I can find some lying around here somewhere....

All the wire changes in the world will not turn a 1.1 port into a 2.0
port.

You could try to find a new plug/wire kit from a supplier that will
fit you case or just install a 6in1 card reader that has an additional
usp port that is 2.0 spec.

I had the same problem and for 20 bucks I installed the card reader
and can now use just about any memory card and have a working usb 2.0
port as well. It all fits just fine in that unused 3.5 bay.

It is the connector built into the case. It is 1.1 speed. On most of
the cases they use the cheapest they can get by with and still claim
to have front usb ports. All the wire changes in the world will not
fix the problem.

You could try to find a replacement plug set that will fit your
case.(good luck) OR you could just install a 6in1 card reader in the
front with a usb port on it that is 2.0 specs.

I had the same problem and got the card reader with a usb 2.0 port for
just 20 bucks and it works like a charm.

In my experience, USB 2.0 cable connected to front case ports or add-in
brackets almost always has "revision 2" labelled on the flex. It may also
say "high speed cable".

A miswired USB port can survive reversed data lines, but a miswired
power lead can kill a mobo quick. Generally, you'll know real
quick if that occurs...:)

Yes I am *pretty certain* that the +5V and GND sockets are on the
correct pins!

When you say "survive reversed data lines", do you mean that data
will still get through (at least perhaps USB 1.1)? ... or just that the
mobo won't go phfffzzzzzzt.?

Just that it won't go "phzzzzzzzt"... BTW, is "phzzzzzzzt" a
*technical* term? ;-)
