Western Digital 3tb Black Will Not Initialize After Fresh Windows Installation

I recently performed a fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium on a recently reformatted SSD (Samsumg 850 Evo). However, after performing the new installation, my Western Digital 3tb Black Drive is not recognized by Windows Disk Management. Any attempt to use the drive results in varying errors, the most common being "Incorrect Function", which occurs when I attempt to initialize the drive.

In my previous install, the drive was GPT, with on big partition, which contained my Windows Backup, along with additional files. Fortunately, I do not need the info on the drive, but I would like to be able to use it again.

HD Tune 2.55 is giving odd results, with the drive not even being recognized as a WD drive (simply showing 2199 GB in the drive list. At least, I assume that's the drive). In addition, Health info is blank and errors obviously returns nothing since the drive cannot seem to be read in the first place.

The drive was working flawlessly yesterday. Can anyone make any suggestions?

If you don't need any of the data on that drive... just insert your Windows DVD and boot from it... and go to Advanced Options and delete the partition and create a new one. It sounds like it may have some kind of error.

it's normal GPT partition problems with w7..

if I'm remembered correctly, u need to install some motherboard utilities/apps/driver to able read above 2.5Tb..
try search and install it...
(some included in the motherboard cd..)

rdc85, I've installed pretty much everything from my Motherboard's CD (The only exceptions being a network manager and some obviously unrelated programs/toolbars). Can you be a bit more specific about what kind of utility I might need? Could Windows Updates potentially solve this issue as well? This is a completely fresh installation.

SBMfromLA: I'm installing from a thumb drive, but there was never a windows installation on the problematic drive. Can you point me in the direction of a more detailed list of steps for how to do this?

I've never installed from USB Flash drive before... but I would imagine you just proceed like you're going to do a new install... then go to Advanced and look for the bad drive..

Just to provide an update, the drive does not show up in the advanced list for Windows install. In addition, the drive does not show up on the boot order in BIOS. It does show up in Western Digital Diagnostic Tool as "(IDE)", but it cannot be read. At this point I'm really out of ideas.

Hmmm.... you think perhaps there's a problem with the SATA port? Have you tried using a different one? I would just replace the SATA cable entirely.
