I spent almost 900 dollars on my pc build and it still isnt great for gaming. i run skyrim at 20 fps in heavily snowy areas and when the weather is clear, it is around 26-40 fps. My specs are: MOTHERBOARD: Gigabyte ga-z97-hd3, POWER SUPPLY: EVGA 430 watt 80+ atx, PROCESSOR: i5 4690k 3.5 ghz but overclocked at 4.24 ghz right now (but i could overclock higher but choose not to), HARD DRIVE: Western Digital 2TB 3.5-inch, SATA 6 Gb/s, 7200 RPM, 64MB Cache WD2003FZEX, RAM: G.Skill 2 x 8(16gb) DDR3-1600 PC3-12800, GRAPHICS CARD: NVIDIA GeForce GT 730 1GB, Windows 8.1 and i use an external usb optical drive if that matters, which is: Lite-On IT Corporation Optical Drives EBAU108-01

i was comparing those two GPUs and the R9 390 came out on top. it gets higher frames per second too in almost every game except a few but i want a gpu that runs very demanding ultra settings at 60 fps without issues plus is good enough to play demanding games in the future.

i just bought this power supply: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ALK3KEM/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00ALK3KEM&linkCode=as2&tag=wwwcareyholzm-20&linkId=6UETW337E3LSKPRL , i am thinking of saving up and buying a r9 390 or r9 390x, idk if i should buy the 390 or 390x, i have heard the 390x is basically the exact same as a 390 but with just 3-5 fps higher but yet it is priced 100 dollars apart. but i could be wrong.

Amen to that. I almost went with the R9 390 to be honest. I just posted the plan for my build here: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-2780027/whoo-finally-planning-gaming-skylake-1080p-gaming-incl-peripherals-chf-1500.html
Only reason I didn't is because I won't need it. I plan on running games at 1080p and I don't mind turning down setting just a tad to get those consistent FPS. And for that reason I didn't need to choose a 650W PSU either. I'm pretty happy, although I understand your point about the memory. One would expect the R9 390 to crush the 970 at higher resolutions, especially when drivers are further optimised.

the r9 390 is only 2 dollars more than what you paid for the 970. it is $349.79 and that is including tax with free shipping from amazon.

i also looked it up and the r9 390 is pretty disappointing when it comes to arma 3 which is another game i want to play at 60 or more fps but it runs poorly (by poorly, i mean below 60 pfs which i dont like) on that game so idk what graphics card to actually get.

Free shipping in America maybe. I live in Switzerland. I try not to buy from Amazon because I can find better prices. Amazon.com and Amazon.de can both be expensive when you take shipping into account. Also, prices are in Swiss francs so you have to careful. Other than that, I mean I like the 970. Not so much that I'll just overlook the 390, but let's just say that it's kind of up in the air right now. I'll keep looking at prices and if I find a really good deal I'll take it.

both of those graphics cards seem ok but still disappointing to me because i want a graphics card that can run almost any game at 60 fps at max settings. the r9 390 runs at 27-56 fps on arma 3 and i like arma 3 and want to play it and that is disappointing. idk what graphics card i should get that would be what i am looking for that runs my favorite games at 60 fps at least with max settings. my monitor is also a 1440x900 resolution.

Sounds like you're in a bit of a pickle. If you really want those FPS, then you should save up and go for the 980 or 980Ti. Apart from running the cards in SLI/Crossfire, that's the next best option.

Weird... What are your temperatures exactly? The GPU is what is probably causing low FPS.

GPU temp is averaging around 41 C. why?

Don't get a CX series PSU, they are supposed to not be very reliable. What resolution is your monitor? Because an R9 390 can max really almost any AAA title at 1080p 60fps.

The 980 won't do much better on ARMA< you will just have to lwer the settings. It is a very unoptimized game.

yea and i have a 1440x900 resolution and i already bought the corsair power supply and i highly doubt corsair is unreliable on their power supplies, they are a big and popular pc company and i have seen a professional of 25 years of pc experience use this for a gaming build so i think you should reconsider what you think of corsair because they are a good quality company and i bought my pc case from them as well and if by some chance it is no good then i can return it cause i bought from amazon and they have great returns. not to mention it has great reviews. 4.3 out of 5 stars, see for yourself: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ALK3KEM/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00ALK3KEM&linkCode=as2&tag=wwwcareyholzm-20&linkId=6UETW337E3LSKPRL , but i will give it a try and see how it goes, if it goes bad or doesnt work then i will keep the one i have currently and return that one and find a better one. but thank you for trying to help.

Most of their PSUs are only tier three (refer to this thread for PSU quality:http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html)

Seasonic and XFX PSUs are better quality,

no no no no..

Those Corsair CX power supplies are rated at Tier 4 on our power supply list. Not suitable for any gaming system.

You really do not want to make the jump to GTX 980 territory. That is a massive increase in cost, for not a lot extra FPS. If I remember right, the GTX 970 has 92% of the GTX 980's performance for about $200 less money.

Like I said the other night, GTX 970 should run everything you talked about at 60FPS, but you might need to lower some settings to high from ultra. There is no shame in that.

OC GTX 970 beats 980...

i cancelled my purchase of that power supply. is there a better power supply i should buy that can run my build plus maybe the r9 390 8gb instead of the gtx 970? i hear the r9 390 is better than the gtx 970.

Maybe try this: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/seasonic-power-supply-s12g650

which one would be best? i would probably like the 850w one because of just in case i upgrade gpu in the future or something but which would be best?

thank you man, i am terrible at choosing so im glad you give me a straight up answer. do the people from the like have good returns if it isnt what i am looking for? and do you recommend me getting the r9 390 or the 970? i kinda like what i am seeing more from the r9 390 but what do you think?
