Hello,

I'm beginning to take interest in the (basic) pc hardware components and I don't know where to start. So, I decided what better place to ask for help than here! Do you know some good books or sites that I could possibly read to learn about computer hardwares? I'm sort of looking for like...knowing how the components function and what's in the component to make it work etc.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

There are an enormous number of introductory computing books available at virtually every bookstore. Amazon surely has a good selection. All of the ones that I know the names of off hand are very advanced, so I can't give you any specific names but perhaps some others will be able to do so.

Asking around here is always a good idea. I'd be happy to answer any questions that you may have; either ask them here or, if you think that they're too stupid and are afraid to ask them publicly (heh), PM them to me.

Look at your local colleges and see what books are being used for coursework. Good chance you can pick up a few books at very low cost from students who no longer need or want the books.

You can also learn quite a bit by going to manufacturer websites and downloading tutorial materials (which can be a bit product biased) but often teach via diagrams and text. Make it a routine to visit such sites and scan through forums, FAQs.

Plus you can often download the User Guides/Manuals for many products such as modems, routers, etc. You can learn quite a bit just perusing those. All free as well.

If you know anyone in IT ask if they have any old manuals, etc. around. Or make some contacts to make them aware of your interest. But be willing to take anything offered..... sometimes older documents are more explanatory.

But beyond all that do the best you can to scrap together old hardware etc, to set up a test lab. Hands on doing things will really help you learn.
