what are soundcards?

i was wondering what exactly is a soundcard/ should i buy one and what is a good cheap soundcard

if you enjoy listening to high fidelity music on your computer than you might want to look at getting one. but if your just mostly gaming or listening to mp3s, the onboard is good enough. (though some gamers really benefit)

yea i game but i love sound quality for games, movies, music etc.. Do soundcards provide surroundsound?
