i have an HP Z400 and i need a new case as this does not have good cooling, but how do i know what case the motherboard will fit in?

Solution

A full size ATX board is 12" wide by 9.6" deep

should i get a mid tower or full size?

As you move from one to the other, the difference is sometimes hard to discern. I forget the actual cut off .... depending on day of week, I blame kids, drink, wimmen or age :) ....but 21.5: tall might mean mid-tower and 22.5 High is fill tower.

How big would depend on what you need to put in it, how fast you want it to go and how much you wanna spend. I used to keep lists of about 5 cases in multiple size / cost categories, now I'd say 9/10 builds we're involved in go w/ Phanteks...
It looks like the HP Z400 workstation uses a standard ATX motherboard so a mid or full tower case will work. I've never moved an HP motherboard to another case so I can't suggest a specific case.

ATX NoBos fit in ATX cases
mATX MoBos fit in mATX cases
ITX MoBos fit in ITX cases

... you see where this is going

FlexATX (229 × 191 mm)
microATX (244 × 244 mm)
Mini ATX (284 × 208 mm)
Standard ATX (305 × 244 mm)
Extended ATX (EATX) (305 × 330 mm)
WTX (356 × 425 mm)

Be aware however that HP, Dell and other mass market vendors like to trap you into buying things from them by using proprietary componentry....special connectors, moutning screw dimensions, etc.

i have 7, so a standard ATX case should work?

yes, standard ATX. Make sure your motherboard has the right orientation as compared to BTX... B as in Backwards

mine is aprox 12" wide by 9.6" deep, so ATX case should be good? thanks for the help

as long as the slots on back are enough then either. mid tower atx with 7 slots is the safe play. Another consideration is power supply mounting on top or bottom. If your cpu 4 (or8) pin header is at top left corner of motherboard... and you have your OEM power supply at bottom, sometimes this particular cable won't reach in larger cases. Power supply mounting at top makes this a non-issue, but i personally like power supply at bottom so more weight is lower.

it will fit in a mid tower though?
