You should be able to toss a Core2Quad 6xxx in there but don't expect miracles, modern CPUs are about twice as fast clock-for-clock, so you will still get sluggish performance in anything that depends heavily on single-core performance... which is the majority of stuff most people do on a regular basis. Core2 was great back in the day but is very much passed its best-before date today for anything much beyond being a googling machine or media player.

The Core 2 Extreme series are the best for your socket, but you can pay > $1000, and it still wont be as fast as this dirt cheap i7 processor: https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core2-Extreme-X9770-vs-Intel-Core-i7-2600/m10543vs620 .

It is not much faster than this one: https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core2-Extreme-X9770-vs-Intel-Core-i3-2100/m10543vsm41 .

So you will be probably better off upgrading your entire system, like I mean selling your optiplex, and buy a much better newer optiplex.

I had to basically mangle the case in order to get the gpu to fit also the budget for the cpu is 50 dollars. Also what optiplex do you recommend I upgrade to.

Basically what ever one you feel like.

I bought a barebone optiplex 3020, so I can put an 17 4770k inside.

Buy one that does not use an outdated or an obsolete socket, like what I did. But Remember, These machines only support Intel sockets.

You will probably want one with an lga1150 or 51 socket.

The optiplex 7020 supports the lga1151socket, and has an i5, and the the optiplex 3060 also supportsthe lga 1151 socket, but these machines are cheaper if they only support older sockets, and/or come only with 4gb of ram. But it would be hard to find these really cheaply used if they are using such recent socket types. So you can wait till Intel releases the lga 1159 socket, and these 1151 optiplexes will be cheaper, or you can buy a really cheap used working optiplex 3020 and put a 4770k or 4790k inside.

Do you want a cheap optiplex?
Like I said, it would be easier finding a cheaper one if it supports an older socket.

But if you really want an optiplex with an 1151 socket, than maybe sell the existing CPU and replace it with a better one. BUT... you would have to make sure the existing CPU supports the same lga1151 version as the CPU you are getting. There are 2 lga 1151 sockets. Lga1151v1,and Lga1151Vv2. they need to match.

I hope this helps. Just buy a good one.
