Thinking of building a new pc for about 1400 AUD, not sure what CPU i should get. I'm tossing up between the AMD 8350, i5 4690k, i7 4790k.

I know there is a major difference in performance.
First off between the i5 and i7, is multi threading really necessary
Also is the 8350 even a plausible choice

thanks

The 8350 is ok when paired with a good card, but it pales in comparison to any of the i-series Intel chips, even the i3 for games that aren't extremely CPU intensive or highly threaded. If gaming is the main priority, I'd go with any of the i5 models. Read this, it's informative and eye opening. Especially when you look at the gaming benchmarks the i3 puts up using a GTX 980 as compared to the FX 8 core chip. The 8350 doesn't do anything the 8320 can't do, since they're the same silicone just clocked differently.

Thanks, would you know if i was to go from an i7 2600 to i5 4690k, would there be any performance loss, or if i was to stay about the same. ( i know i wouldnt need to upgrade, but im just wondering) thanks

Majority of the time i would be gaming, but i would have other programs open

Well, of course I was considering US dollars, I'm sure it's much more in Australia and NZ. For the Xeon I generally recommend this as an i5 alternative, but it really depends on budget. Anything more than that and you might as well get the 4Ghz i7. Considering the 4690k is only 20 bucks less, I'd say the additional 4 threads are well worth the extra twenty bucks. If you want the i5 k chip for overclocking purposes though, then of course the Xeon isn't a good choice.

The Xeon E3 is identical to an i7, with 8 threads, but no overclocking or integrated graphics.

This is not entirely correct.

1. Models that end in 5 or 6 have integrated graphics. Like the e3-1245v3 for example.
2. None of the e3-122x chips have hyperthreading. Like the e3-1220v3 for example.

Also keep in mind that the v3 Xeons are LGA1150 and the v2 Xeons are LGA1155.

The e3-1230v3/1231v3 are great cpus and I highly recommend them. You can throw them in a cheaper H97 motherboard and the final price would actually come out cheaper than the i5 4690k + Z97 would be.
