You realize you'll need new RAM and a new motherboard too right? You simply can't buy everything you want for £300. You can buy a 4790K though and that should do it for most games.

Sometimes we have to make assumptions on here though to give the best answer possible. But we need to say what could go wrong too if we make such assumptions. For example we can assume that the £300 is just for the CPU and that the op has a budget for the other stuff. But we can't ever assume that the op knows as much as an expert on the subject unless we see such badges on their account. So we have to add in something like, "Just to be sure you know you will also need new RAM and a new motherboard." Sometimes we have to make assumptions to fill in missing information that the op can't or won't give. For example if the op doesn't know what motherboard they have then we can make assumptions based on what CPU they have. A K Intel CPU usually means a Z board. That's not always true but it's the best assumption to make given what hardware they are using. I'm sure you already knew a lot of that though.
