Hello, I want a new CPU for my computer for gaming. I'm unsure what my motherboard takes and what type of motherboard I have... OK so I have a
HP Pavilion p6210y. I switched the case to a gaming one. (If that matters any..)
I have also put in a 650watt PSU, GTX 660, and 8GBs of DDR2 ram. Now the specs on HP.com(http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c01859864) say I have a Athlon II x4 620 (which is true), but for the motherboard it says the socket is AM2.. The Athlon II x4 620 is a AM3 thou... Also it says the Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades:

AMD Athlon X2 (Bt)
AMD Athlon 64 X2 up to 6000+ (W)
AMD Phenom Triple-Core up to 8xxx (AM2+) (Toliman)
AMD Phenom Quad-Core 9xxx series (AM2+) up to 9850 (Agena)

My processor isn't even in that list?? So how do I find out what socket I truly have and what my motherboard is? Is my motherboard a AM3?

Thank you for taking the time to read. Have a nice day. :bounce:

P.S If my PC is a socket Am3 can i get a FX 6300 to work with my PC? Or will my ram not work with it

Solution
it looks like you have an AM2+ motherboard that can run AM3 chips. i would contact HP or the motherboard manufacturer directly to find out which FX CPUs, if any, it supports.
you can always try installing the FX. if it fits easily in the socket and the system boots than it works.

Socket: AM3, yeah and it's really old, DDR2 memory. may be you can buy a better mobo to use DDR3 with 4 gen intel core and you switch your case then i think change the mobo is a better idea.

No you can not install an FX series processor in there. Those only work on AM3+ (942 pins vs the 941 on AM3) You can go the opposite way and put AM3 into AM3+
I highly recommend a new motherboard and processor, its 2016, time to leave FM2 behind (and DDR2)

Trust me I would If I could. I have a problem thou, when I try to uninstall my motherboard the standoffs turn when i turn the screws.... I've tried holding them with pliers already... This is really frustrating. I do not know what to do! I'm getting like 50-120 FPS ON CSGO! My CPU is terrible.... I need a new one 🙁

take the back panel off of the case along with the motherboard and snip the standoff(s) off with some thin wire cutters. though that's drastic.
you can possibly hold them with even a pair of tweezers while turning the screws.

i had this problem with old builds, usually in cheaper cases, and it was never very difficult to eventually get it done somehow.
because it appears you are creating a gaming system and those HP cases and pretty much everything in them is cheap garbage.
