What displayport cable can output 144hz?

I recently purchased the AOC G2770PF 144hz gaming monitor and also a DVI-D dual link cable, it turns out this cable isn't able to output 144hz, when I go onto "screen resolution" and change the hz from 60 to 144, everything is fine until I load up a game and then the screen says that the display is not supported (paraphrasing, dont remember exactly what it said). If I wanted to go with displayport instead would there be a specific displayport cable I'd need? or do all displayport cables output 144hz?
