What do I need to Upgrade for 4K gaming

I'm super new to this 4K gaming thing, and I cant seem to find solid answers that I understand on the web. TBH I've always felt that 4K was a little too new to be worth the money to upgrade. But I want to know if it's realistically in my grasp. I would love any help

AMD Radeon R9 390 8GB
Quad Core i5-4690k CPU
12GB Ram
Acer 60hz 24in Monitor
ASRock Fatal1ty H97 Killer Motherboard

4k resolution is entirely GPU dependent, your i5-4690k is still a sweet processor. I would recommend to get a GTX 1080, you should be able to play games at 4k well but just not at the highest graphics config, if you want Ultra graphics config and 4k you would need something like 2 GTX 1070 in SLI, or 2 GTX 1080 in SLI, perhaps the GTX 1080 ti which will be released soon will be a good single 4k card.
