What does force DX11 Mean?

I was playing a game and I had the option to just play it or force dx11. What does that mean? If I had dx11 shouldn't it already be using dx11? Thanks

DX11 or DirectX 11 is an API that the game uses. Usually, you can just leave it alone and just play the game. No need to worry about a thing.

Some cards run significantly better on different versions of DX. Their game may be designed for DX10 or 9, and not use any features of DX11, but it will allow you to use DX11 for improved performance should your card support it.
