What does it mean to format an SD card

After formatting my card, no new pictures will show up in playback or will transfer to my computer. What did I do?

basically formatting were removing existed previous data and informations

Formatting refreshes the card & overwrites all existing data.

Have you taken any pictures since you formatted?
