What does PCI-E 1.1 x16 mean?

i want to buy a new gpu, a r7 260x
on the site it says that is works on pci-e 3.0
when i look on gpu-z it says that i have pci-e 1.1 x16. however it also says that my current cart the gt 8800 1.1 supports but when i look at the specs on a pc site i says it runs on 2.0.
i am confused , will the r7 work or not?

it means your motherboard has a pcie slot 1.1 that runs at x16.

a r7 260x is a pcie 3.0 card yes.


The gt 8800 is a pcie 2.0 card yes.


What you are missing is the fact that newer versions of pcie are backwards compatible.

They throttle down to the slot speed you have.



3.0 should work on a 1.1 if you have the proper power supply wattage and power plugs.

pcie1.1 is the version number - it runs at pcie1.0 speeds. x16 is how many data bus lanes there are. multiply them together and it gives you the max data rate.

it says that you better can chose for a nvidia card becouse nvidia makes the card more compatible whit 1.0 and 1.1 and that those card are more power hungry becose of that. i looked at the MSI NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750Ti OC 2GB GDDR5 and acording to this http://www.game-debate.com/gpu/index.php?gid=1865&gid2=883&compare=radeon-r7-260x-vs-geforce-gtx-750-ti it needs 50 watt and the r7 115watt, but nvidia said that there card are more power hungery i am again confused

Your r7 260x won't notice any difference.
