Are you connecting to it through wireless, wired or USB? It basically means the Mac and the printer are not communicating.

yep the printer isnt showing up in your network for some reason
1 its not physically connected via its I/O lead...
2 its not configured correctly
3 your drivers aint working
4 the printer is turned off
