What gpu should I get to go with a i7 3770k

Im getting a PC build with an i7 3770k but not sure if the motherboard is a k series board. Anyway I was looking at getting a gtx 1080 but heard it could get bottlenecked by the CPU. Basically I will be keeping this CPU for quite some time so was wondering what the best gpu to get would be?

What screen resolution is your display? What is the V. refresh rate?
The Ivy Bridge i7 won't be a major bottleneck, but the GTX 1070 would probably be better balanced.

Your i7-3770K has performance equivalent to between a i5-7400 and a i5-7500.

If I were in your situation I'd:

* buy a Noctual NH-U12S air CPU cooler
* overclock i7-3770K to at least 4.5 Ghz; I've read that 4.7+ Ghz is possible with that chip, but would probably necessitate AIO water cooler.
* update socket LGA1155 motherboard to latest BIOS and firmware to prepare it for Nvidia Pascal GPU.
* buy either a GTX 1070 or GTX 1080 Ti.

All of this is assuming that you already possess a quality power supply. Could you also tell us what power supply and graphics card models that you're currently using?

I'm using a 27 inch 1080p 144hz display. The power supply I believe is an 800w power supply. I'm getting it off my dad as he doesn't need something as powerful so I'm swapping my i3 4330

So in answer to your direct question, I would personally have no qualms about pairing a i7-3770K with up to a GTX 1080 Ti. However, it's best of you list your entire specs, if you want a more detailed answer. Your motherboard, memory, storage, specific manufacturer and model of power supply (not just advertised wattage). I'd also want to know two of three games that you're most interested in playing. A 1080 Ti would be nice, but if your system only had 4 GB of RAM and a slower HDD, then perhaps a GTX 1070 along with other component upgrades would be best. It all depends on your answers to my questions above. I'm even curious to know your specific model of display, because I'd like to know if it had adaptive sync built into it.

Random thought: 800 watts is a odd figure for a power supply. The only manufacturers that I can think of with that precise wattage is a Silverstone and Raidmax. Since the Silverstone units are titanium efficiency / small form factor / cost $200, am I correct in guessing that your dad's PSU is the Raidmax? If so, then you should definitely upgrade it to a higher quality model. If I'm wrong, then disregard.

Don't quote me on it because it's been a while since I have seen his PC but it could be a Zalman psu.

Edit: it's actually a Tagen bz series 800w psu. Motherboard is a GA-Z77X-UD3H and has 16gb RAM which I'm assuming is 1600mhz
