I have an alienware aurora r4 and I currently have a NVIDIA gtx 555 and a power supply of 875 Watts. I have a price range of about 600$ i can go a little over if i think the purchase would be worth while. what gpu's could I get?

Solution
If it turns out to be this one:

...it would be marginal but still safe for the GTX 970.

the cpu i have is currently clocked at 3.60ghz but it may be possible to overclock it to 3.80-4.10~ the psu is 7.9 amps and 50/60 hz with 100~240 V I believe. also will be working with 24 gigs of ram ( i know its a strange number). the company that produced the pc made sure it was upgradeable as far as im aware

I was thinking this and the only graphic card i knew it was compatible with other than current was the titan Z so that lead me to believe i could pretty much mash it with anything. i have the two slots for dual gpu.

Well... that still doesn't tell me which CPU you have. But it sounds like it may be sufficient to keep up with most cards if it is a 4 core.
Those PSU specs are meaningless. They are the primary side; the side that plugs into the wall receptacle. What we need is the secondary side. That will be listed on the PSU's nameplate.
But I'll go out on a limb and say the GTX 970 would be safe since it is only a 145W card. The GTX 980 if your PSU can handle it.

Your i7 will run any card you can afford. The only thing to determine is the +12V specs that your PSU has. But the GTX 970 is still the one to consider.
But I'm betting this is your PSU:

...in which case you are free to pick any Gfx Card you like.

It's ether the dell 875w Power Supply: Dell W299G Or 525w Power Supply: Dell M821J
But I'm pretty sure it's the 875
