what happens if a cpu overclock fails?

if I'm overclocking and it fails what do I do next? and what will the pc do if the overclock fails? do I need to clear the cmos everytime? or do I just boot into the bios and put the bios to default settings then attempt to overclock again?

It can do many different things, most common thing that happens to me when the CPU is unstable is either the system just locks up or I get a watchdog timeout blue screen. With my motherboard all I have to do is hard shutdown the system, it will then POST in safe mode and automatically bring me into the bios settings where I can lower clocks or increase voltage to get the cpu stable or whatever else you need to do. You certainly do not need to reset the bios to default every time you push an overclock too far, that would be a real pain.

also do you think its ok to leave the voltage on auto and just change the multiplier? my cpu is a i6 7600k and motherboard is a asus maximus 8 hero. i want to start at either 4.5 ghz or 4.7 ghz

Okay? Sure, but personally I would never use auto voltage. I find more often than not it applies way more voltage than is necessary. I would try manual voltage between 1.2 and 1.35v for 4.5ghz, depending on the silicon of your specific 6700K, lower the better assuming the cpu is stable.

The only time I would ever clear the CMOS after a failed overclock is if for some reason the motherboard refused to POST at all, which doesn't really happen anymore on pretty much any somewhat modern motherboard meant for overclocking like your maximus board.

my cpu is a 7600k not a 6700k,motherboard is a asus maximus 8 hero. and ok ill start with the voltage at the settings you specified.

Oh, my mistake. The 7600k will likely require less voltage, I would say 1.2-1.3v vcore for 4.5ghz on the 7600k, probably closer to 1.2.
