what happens if you disable a GPU driver?

People say before you upgrade GPU you must disable the old GPU driver in devmgmt.msc (device management).
But wouldn't disabling the driver cause video to stop working? If the GPU driver is disabled, does the Microsoft basic display adapter kick in?
One more question? Is the windows basic video driver sufficient, or is it best to install the GPU driver? Because I heard people have problems with their GPU drivers, and the windows driver is the most stable I know.

I've not heard of disabling the driver, but you should uninstall and do a fresh install of the latest driver when you change your GPU. You have no choice but to use the Windows built in driver during this process, but it works fine to enable you to do this.
you absolutely want your GPU driver. whehter you have nvidia or AMD... the software lets you update and basically does it all for you.

those of us that are super particular will manually uninstall the GPU driver and remove all the traces of it in registry and appdata before installing the new one.
no major reason for this typically.. just open AMD catalyst or NVIDIA control panel and hit 'find newest' drive and follow the prompts
