What is causing lag...router, VPN, or software?

Hi all,

I have set up a vpn connection between my laptop and my office domain to log into our server management software from offsite. I have made the connection, but the lag on the software makes it almost unusable. I need help diagnosing what is causing the lag, whether it is my VPN settings, the router, the software program, or some other issue.

I am using an asus RT-AC66U connecting a brand new dell poweredge server running windows server 2012, connecting to a Win7 machine. I've used both the windows built-in VPN software as well as the router's built-in openVPN, and both services have the lag. Surfing the internet through the VPN portal isn't too bad. It is slow, but not unbearable. Speed test shows only 1.5 down and up, which I know is slow, but is fine for simple web browsing.

The software I am using is not graphics intensive, in fact it is the opposite. It is an old database management system. I'm not sure if the archaic nature of the software is making it difficult to break up into bits to end over the net?

Anyway, I'm trying to figure out how to tell where the bottleneck is. I know there are routers out there with more processing capabilities (ac66u just has 600mhz), but I don't want to spend money on a better router if that isn't the trouble.

Any help would be appreciated.

Could be a combination of all of these things. The bottom line is that anything run through a VPN will be slower and that anything run through your router/internet (unless you have high grade equipment on both ends) will run slower. I can't really think of any way around this lag.

Intranet protocols can be very chatty. I also VPN into work and some of the remote interactions like try to right-click on a file can take tens of seconds because of a crazy number of round trips. I can actually tell the difference between 20ms and 30ms latency.

The best way I found to get around this is to remote desktop into another system at work, and do all of my work from that machine.
