What is difference between dual and quad channel ram?

I was looking for corsair 8gb ram. And found that there are channels (dual and quad). What is d difference? And which one is faster?

And also what is d difference between various categories like vengeance and platinum etc. Any comparison table ?

Update: It may be dumb ques. Suppose, i order for 8 gb ram (2x4gb) dual channel. Will i get two stick of 4 gb or 1 stick?
I am confuse. I was watching unboxing of ram on youtube and that made me to ask this dumb* ques.

Update 2: I got it. dual channel means 2 stick of 4 gb ram. So how much dual channel is faster than single module. And also i was looking for a 8 gb ram (1x8gb) and its configuration is quad core. what does it mean?

Quad channel RAM kits offer wider bandwidth on motherboards that support it, which results in faster transferring speed. If you motherboard only support dual-channel RAM, then getting quad-channel kit won't get you any increase in bandwidth over dual-channel.

The Platinum RAM series from Corsair offer better heat-spreader and OC ability over normal series like Vengeance.

You should buy a 2 x 4GB kit for dual channel mode as it will be faster than single channel mode (not a whole lot, but it's faster). For Quad channel support, you need 4 modules and a motherboard that supports it, e.g., AMD G34 or Intel LGA 2011.

Corsair Vengeance RAMs has decent performance, not really good for OC-ing, big heat-spreader. Will not fit some big full-tower CPU cooler, thou.

No, but as I said before, it will run a bit slower than a dual channel kit. If you add a second one, then it will run in dual channel mode. It would run in quad channel mode ONLY if you install 4 modules on the right platform (which you certainly don't have).
