Hey guys, i have a question for you.

My pc's pretty old and only supports DDR2 memory cards.
Currently i have 3 GB of ram and i wanted to upgrade....
Searched in ebay and i found this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/8GB-2X4GB-DDR2-MEMORY-RAM-PC2-5300-ECC-FULLY-BUFFERED-FBDIMM-DIMM-/350428630200?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item51972c8cb8

This is REALLY CHEAP so i thought maybe there is a catch, and then i saw this ECC FULLY BUFFERED.
Can anybody explain to me what is that exactly?

This is my motherboard😱therboard
Manufacturer MSI
Model G41M4 (MS-7592)

Can u say if this ram card will work on my pc? if not, can u specify a ram that will? (with a link please!)

Thanls!

Hi,

The answer to your question is explained in great detail in my tutorial which can be found at the top of this forum.

ECC adds an extra memory chip to each rank on the DIMM. The purpose of this chip is to detect any errors that may have arisen due to degraded/faulty memory or background radiation.

Buffering adds one or more extra chips to each rank on the DIMM. The purpose of buffering is to improve signal integrity.

Although buffering and ECC are separate technologies, they are usually found together and are used in servers and workstations. Consumer motherboards usually support neither of them.

As a side note, Fully Buffered DIMMs (FB-DIMM) are not electrically or mechanically compatible with unbuffered DIMMs or registered DIMMs (which are partly buffered).
