Get Diablo1 & 2, Fallout 1 & 2, Baldurs Gate 1 & 2, Stronghold and C&C saga and you will be happily stuck in your room for the next 6 months. That should full your RPG/RTS fix for rest of your life :)

To many to just name one: "not in order"

Warcraft 2 & 3, Starcraft, Red Alert 1 & 2, Team Fortress Classic, Day of Defeat, Counter Strike, Quake series (before 4), Unreal Tournament.

Best,

+1 to ImajorI for MOO, totally forgot about that one! The first night I bought it I played from 10pm to 6am, MOO2 had the same effect on me.

Agreed. I cant even remember much other than the fact that, after i installed MOO and MOO2, i didnt so much as move, get food or drink or got to the toilet from 11am till about 4am the next morning. After that my mother thought that game were the devils instruments :)

And then Diablo and Starcraft were installed...

Mechwarrior 2, of the giant mechanized bipedal war machine smashing everything in its path genre. May not work in XP directly out of the box, but I think some patches for that problem exist.

Splendid
Doom series, Quake series, Unreal series, Diablo series, Duke Nukem 3D, Half-Life and so on. Quake 1 is probably my favorite out of everything, followed by Quake 2 in close 2nd. I'm betting all these will run in XP

AoE I & AoE II
Civ II
Caesar 3
MOO2
Hardwar
Freespace will probably run, not sure about Freespace 2.
Need for Speed 3 was fun :)

That should keep you busy well past Christmas... and Easter!

Caesar 3 - I must have wasted away days of my youth playing that game it was so addictive, the only game that I've played that was as addictive as Caesar 3 was Elite on the Atari ST.

I installed Fantasy General last week and got into it like I did the first time in 1996. :) I had the same experience with the old "Colonization" game a year ago.

If you want a really fun free old game - Lords of the Realm and it's expansion are on the underdogs, last I checked.

It's a great real time/turn based hybrid.

This thread makes me feel old..

Warlords II Turn based RPG/RTS, it's got terrible gfx, runs on XP, but it's fun as hell. Multiplayer (each takes their turns). We played that at university drunk alot.

Age of empires 2. One of the best games i have ever played. And since a few other people have brought up emulators. You should also check out Earthbound.

Thief Dark Age
Thief Metal Age
Baldur's Gate 1-2
Planescape
System Shock 2
Dungeon Keeper 2
Masters of Orion
Tribes Vengeance

All of these will run on XP, some may give you issues with dual core CPUs but you should be able to enter the Task Manager (ctrl+alt+del), goto Processes, rt clk the process (ie: Thief.exe) and select Set Affinity (uncheck CPU 1). Again, this is ONLY for dual core CPUs. This drove me nuts until I found the cause and fix for it on some Thief fansite.
