which one is faster? a 7200rpm internal hard drive or a 80mb/s usb 3.0 solid state memory stick

About the same really. But it depends on the exact drives in question. USB 3.0 can be misleading as they can put any speed of flash memory on that drive. When it comes to hard disks, they are good at sequential data, but not so good when it comes to random data all over the drive.

Many 7200rpm drives can exceed 80MB/s in a straight sequential pull.
