what is "grounding"

what does grounding do? I want to build a pc and came across this what is it exactly?

It's what you do to the kids when they are bad.....just kidding, when building or handling components, you don't want to get any static discharge to them. You can get a grounding strap that attaches to say the computer to keep any static electricity from transferring to the components or many just try to be sure to touch something metallic like the outside of say a PSU, metallic case, etc before handling the electronic components.
