LOL - no your post was fine ... pasting it as plain text in the body of a yahoo test email did nothing ... but pasting it into a wordpad .txt attachment triggered the virus warnings ... funny thing was I could never get it past my RR servers ... so I just scanned the file with AVG 1st alone and 2nd as a full system scan (file on desktop) and AVG caught it both times, both ways ...

I pasted the string into a txt file and tried to save it to my documents...as soon as I hit the save button AVAST went off like a fire alarm...I love these warnings..heh heh..sirens blaring, messages flashing, and the text says.."Don't Panic" LOL

....WW (5.0)

as antivirus:
www.free-av.com , its free, daily updated and is the best I think. also is not so weight as norton.
as firewall I think zone alarm.

Wanted to let you know that after AVG failed to catch the test virus file in the "scan selected areas" mode ... I uninstalled it and installed Avast 4.5 ... the AV caught the test file everytime ... so for now, I'm using Avast ... thanks for proving your point.

One question about Avast ... is there a way to scan selected areas/folders without full scans ... ie, just desktop directories, my doc's etc. ?

...more people are driven insane through religious hysteria than by drinking alcohol - W.C. Fields

You should be able to just right click on the directory and choose "Scan (foldername)".
You can also select directories to scan from inside avast too. When on the simple user interface you can just check the box next to "Folders" and it will prompt you to select directories to scan.

Ponder this;
A Panda walks into a restaurant, sits down and orders a meal. When he finishes, he pulls out a gun, fires two shots in the air and leaves. When the waiter asks what that was all about. The Panda throws a poorly punctuated book about wild animals and says, "I'm a Panda, look it up".

The waiter looks up Panda and it says, "The wild Panda eats, shoots and leaves".

How should it have been punctuated?

I need to point out an issue with Avast 4.5. I also use several on-line scans (Trend Micro, Panda, etc.) - Avast identifies several files associated with Panda's On-Line scan as Virus ... see this known issue on Avast web-site. I made the mistake of deleting the false positives and now the Panda Scan is totally fried - can't reestablish it.

This is a heads-up!

Only thing i dont like about avast is that i cannot send emails bigger then 1 meg with outlook express.
I get the message that i timed out or some crap like that. I uninstalled avast and was then able to send any size email. Unless there are certain settings that i dont know about, im going back to Symantec Corporate AV.

IMO, there aint none better than Sym Corp Edition...
Just the rest of us either ain't got access to it, or can not justify its price....

Viruses made by haxors are caught by all major AV sw...
It is just when one of the AV corp engineers want to ramp up biz in their arena, they write the AV sigs, then release the virus, then beat thier drum loudest proclaiming how much better theirs is since theirs detected the virus first!!!
Just keep whatever U use up to date...

I will say this: I have this cupholder.exe file that opens your cd tray when clicked(im sure most have seen this little diddy) and Avast detects it as some trojan virus but Symantec corporate does not detect it and symantec found others that avast did not.
Once again as most will say, It is user preference.
As far as paying for symantec Corp. I could never afford that. I'm lucky and had a friend who has it.
But if i were to chose between avast and the regular norton AV, i would chose Avast.

Thats not normal, Avast wasn't installed right.

I also had a few problems with getting a previous version of Avast and getting the mail settings right.

It took me 10 minutes reading the manual the first time to get it working properly, which is unacceptable.

To be fair I had a similar problem with Norton AV 2000.

Norton is definately easier to install and less likely to require any manual intervention. Its user interface is also more intuitive.

Installing in on someone computer I am repairing is going to be either expensive or illegal 🙁

The latest versions also don't work on slower PC's, and are huge resource hogs.

That being said all the following version of Avast installed properly the first time, and runs great on modern PCs as well as slow PC's running 9x.
