I really want to upgrade my CPU from my I7 6700k. Would I be able to get an I7 8700k or an I7 9700k?

7700K, assuming the BIOS is updated. Although overclocking your 6700K would eat up the minimal performance differenc.e

While it's the same 'socket' in terms of pins for an 8700K or 9700K,, Z170 and Z270 only support 6th and 7th Gen.
