Hello everybody! I am looking to replace an old 5400 RPM mechanical drive (in an old laptop) with an SSD. As long as the speed of the SSD isn't unbearable, I'll be happy.

What matters the most to me though is the longevity of the SSD. I generally need it to last for five years. I've looked everywhere, but I can't seem to find any information about the best SSD out there in terms of longevity. Please offer your advice! Thank you.

Solution
What is the make/model of your laptop?
Without that, nobody can tell you if it is suitable for ssd replacement.

Most likely it is since 2,5" sata drives have been available in laptops for a long time.

Do a google search on your laptop name and ssd replacement.
You should be able to see a video on how to take the laptop apart and replace the drive.

Newegg is perhaps my go to source for parts.
They market for other sellers who may not be as prompt in shipping or have as good customer service.
I prefer to source from newegg directly.
Here is the link to a 250GB samsung 860 evo for $60

The 500gb version is $80...
That video will be very helpful to you.
Here is one I think will be better:

There may be a PDF of the service manual around, but I did not find it.

First thing, run the ssd migration app to copy the C drive to the samsung 860 via a usb cable.
It takes a while, perhaps an hour.

It is best to remove or disable the battery when working.
Without looking at the video, you would not have known that 4 of the screws were hidden under the rubber pads.

Use the right size of philips head screwdrivers to remove the screws.
Often they are very tight and you do not want to strip the heads.
Sometimes you need to press down hard to avoid stripping the screws.

As you take them out make a note of where they go. They are different sizes.
Perhaps a couple of dishes to hold them would be good.

And, pay no attention to the sata II issue mentioned above.
The big gain of a ssd is in the random I/O quickness. Very little of what you do will be impacted by sequential speed difference. I doubt you have sata II anyway.

---good luck----
Actually, I wish you skill which is more important.

Is this what you're looking for?
Oh, and would this video also be suitable?

I looked at that, but it is not a hardware service manual.

As to the video, I imagine that it would be the same at the others.
Look at all three until you feel comfortable about the process.

The 250GB Samsung 860 Evo you linked to earlier is no longer being sold and shipped by Newegg themselves. It's being sold and shipped by 3C Expert.

It says that it is sold by Memories Direct US and Fulfilled by Amazon.
You may be getting something different.

My Amazon link was that way yesterday, and the same today.

Amazon and Newegg switch things around, based on some backend voodoo. An item you see might not be the exact same listing as I see.

"Fulfilled by Amazon", I'd still buy it.
Do you think I should still buy the Newegg listing though?

Last year, I bought a refurb laptop. 3rd party seller on Newegg, completely different company.
Much positive feedback.

They screwed me on the Windows license.

Pos feedback at these sites means little.

I'm just stating what I would do. The choice is all up to you.
Honestly just buy either. I'd choose amazon since they have a really relaxed return policy. But seller is not likely to change your experience with the product.
You are over thinking this.

Amazon has it and usually has quick delivery.

Newegg also has it, at the same price, but delivery might be a bit longer.

I would not worry about ordering from either.
Okay, I guess I'll go for the Amazon listing. Should I be worried about the SSD not fitting in the HDD tray?
