umm.. at stock speeds, probably the XP1700+
the T-bred 'B' version of it anyway. I guess you have a Palomino version?

If you do, which mobo do you have? It might need a BIOS update to support newer core Xp chips.

Yes I do have a palmino core, my rig is updated...
I got an F9 GigaByte 7va , 256x2 pc266...
I understand you are refering to the Thoroughbred core. But If I'm upgrading, why not to go to the Barton core at the XP2500+? or its to hot as well?

The barton will run a little cooler, but not much. I would try the zalman "fan mate 1" and reduce your heatsink fan rpms down to 3200-3500. Your cpu temp won't rise much, and you'll have a quieter pc. You should be able to use your old heatsink. You can also try removing the side of the case, and using a small regular fan to blow air inside.

A Barton 2500+ at stock speeds will probably be quite cool. The problem is your RAM won't support the 166Mhz FSB of the Bartons & higher t-breds, as it's 133Mhz RAM. (266 DDR).

If you wanted to get a Barton, or a T-bred faster than a XP2400+(which comes in both a 133FSB and a 166FSB version), you'd need to upgrade your memory too. either that or you'll be Overclocking your existing RAM, and it might not cope with it.

All the low and mid-end XP chips are comparatively cool, compared to palomino chips, so you'll probably be happy with any of them, if you get a good quiet cooler (something from ZalMan maybe? - not too sure, I've always bought HSFs that sound like hairdryers)

Because you did specificly state "the coolest", that's why. Unless you underclock and undervolt it just doesn't get any cooler than a ThoroughbredB 1700+. You could of course go hotter if you wanted and still be 'cool', but you would no longer be "the coolest".

You can modify your CPU speed by lowering your FSB in bios. IE 100FSB instead of 133FSB this will mean your CPU will run at 1.1ghz instead of 1.5ghz (the actual clockspeed your 1700+ normally runs at).

You'll then be able to lower your core voltage from 1.75 to 1.65 easily as like a car engine revving at a lower speed your CPU likewise doesn't need as much juice!

I had a 1600+ Palomino that I used to underclock during the summer months and it would run nearly 10 degrees cooler than at its normal speed. If you were using the 1700+ Thoroughbred B CPU underclocked the effect could be great enough for you to use only a passive cooler (heatsink with no fan very quiet)!

All of the new Tbred chips run much cooler than yours. Amd has also come out with much quieter hsfs. Find out if your mobo will support the bartons, then get the one you can afford.

Just get a Tbred B. They cost peanuts these days. In fact you could probably sell your Palomino secondhand foe more than you will spend on a new Tbred B because Palominos are no longer in production and therefore can be sold at a premium.
