What is the highest version of Windows 8.1-sp-#: Pro, Ult ... and is Win 7 Ult sp-1-2 better to stay with than upgrading to Win 8.1 or not ... Win 7 Ult sp-1-2 vs Win 8.1 sp-#.

Dell 9010 i7 3770, 8gb-ram

One is not "higher" than the other....they (Home, Pro, Ultimate) are merely targeted for different audiences.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_7_editions
http://www.thewindowsclub.com/windows-8-1-editions-comparison-chart

Ultimate basically adds Bitlocker.... Home and pro differ in amount of RAM supported as well as network abilities.

Why I use Win 7 Pro over home....

XP Mode
Network Backups
Group Policies
Software restriction Policies

And tho I can't find it officially listed anywhere, there is some kind of restriction on the number of devices on a network. For example, we have one Win 7 Home 64 build and it has issues accessing the shared drives on my box if too many users on the network are using their machines. It was 5 with XP.... was told that restriction was gone with Win 7 but still have issues.

Does Win 8.1 Pro have all of the Win 7-Ult features included, bcs I looked around and there is no Win 8 Ult, only Win 8-Pro or Win 8-Ent ...

I read that when you buy Win 8-Pro that you have to then update the OS to 8.1, is that done through the Win-Updt-pg from the Start Menu ...

Are there "any-things" about Win 7-Pro-or-Ult that are sorely missed if upgrading to Win 8-Pro ... and vice versa ... I was-and-am-still a very big fan of the Win XP Explorer-environment: display-functionality-look-features, how Mozilla-Firefox displays-works in XP, but it's time to upgrade for more advanced features and security ...

I am using a Dell 740 XP-Pro AMD-3500-single-core, 4-gb-ram to write this bcs my new Dell 9010 Win 7-Ult, Intel-i7-3770, 4-gb-ram, cannot boot up past the Startup Repair screen, tried every basic fix, reset cmos, will need help, don't have repair disc, will be ordering one, and might consider upgrading to Win 8-Pro in the process ...

Win 8/8.1 Pro has almost all of what Win 7 Ult does. The few things it doesn't, you will never need.

Win 8 (Home or Pro), should be updated to 8.1 at the earliest opportunity.

Your focus seems to be on the name of the product rather than whether it fills your needs. What features do you think exist in Ultimate that don't exist in Pro for example which you will take advantage of .... if you don't have an answer, then there is no reason to go Ultimate. For example:

Do you need to switch between language packs ?
Do you need or will you use Bit Locker ?

In addition, MS has suspended the "Anytime Upgrade" path, meaning there is no upgrade path ... I tried to upgrade from Win 7 Home Premium on wife's box to Pro, and they told me my only upgrade choice was Win 10. So, unless they have since revised this policy, there is no "upgarde path".

Win 8 promised many things For example, it was claimed to be faster in gaming,... it wasn't. The OS was a complete failure. Every build we did where the user wanted Win 8, subsequently downgraded to Win 7.

And yes, when you install the OS, using Windows Update will upgrade you to the latest version of that OS.

What about Win XP mode, Win 7 has it, Win 8 doesn't but has Win 7 mode. Does Win XP mode under Win 7 fully apply the security of Win 7 updates to the XP mode. How would you compare using Win XP mode under Win 7 vs Win XP mode under vmware, does it fully apply the main OS's security updates over all of the the XP modes use ...

I can add something here in the way of an answer ... 1 week ago I successfully upgraded a used-new-condition Dell 9010 from Win 7 Pro to Ult using the anytime upgrade feature in Win 7 Pro, and it was really easy to do ...

Bit Locker does seem to be an interesting and possibly useful feature ...

"Win 8 promised many things For example, it was claimed to be faster in gaming, it wasn't. The OS was a complete failure. Every build we did where the user wanted Win 8, subsequently downgraded to Win 7."

Thank you, I will repairing my Win 7 Ult and not bothering with upgrading to Win 8 Pro at this time, until it has been reported to be totally upgraded-fixed, as you are alluding to its way too many faults ...

"The ( Win 8 ) OS was a complete failure ..."

Do you mean that it was not any or much better than Win 7, or that it was actually worse than Win 7 in some or many ways ...

Is this entire discussion not moot if no **upgrade** path exists ?

I don't understand how security upgrades relate in any way to XP Mode. XP mode allows older Win XP programs to run under Windows 7.

Win 7 Pro - Has XP Mode
Win 7 Home - Does not have XP Mode but you can use a VMware hack to make it work
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/10911/run-xp-mode-on-windows-7-machines-without-hardware-virtualization/

2 questions:
1. Why?
2. How much did this cost?

"Is this entire discussion not moot if no **upgrade** path exists ?"

Are you referring to the title: "What is the Highest Version of Windows 8.1: Pro, Ult ..."

I was replying to your saying something that sounded like it might be better to stay with Win 7 Ult instead of moving onto Win 8 Pro until MS completely upgraded-fixed it ...

Is XP mode under vmware under the updated-OS's-security ... Someone commented under this 2013-article intowindows.com/xp-mode-in-windows-8 that it wasn't ... 2-comments under that 2013-article:

[ 1 - Oct-27-2013, trn wrote: "If only there was an XP mode that ran XP programs without the security issues that XP is riddled with. Perhaps it is high time that Microsoft helped the Wine Project to make a suitable version for Windows in order to run antiquated programs without the security issues associated with running (parts of) antiquated Operating systems."

I got the Ult upgrade online, was not expensive, but you'll have to search it down ...

The Win 7 "Anytime Upgrade" has not been available from any valid source for quite some time. Years, in fact.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/15045/windows-anytime-upgrade-not-available

Whatever...I'm out.

3 possible reasons that it went through:

1. I might have read somewhere around 2 weeks ago in an "old or more recent article" that MS might have taken the "anytime-upgrade-option" away from Win 7 HP and now it's only offered along with XP Pro ...

2. My copy of oem Win 7 Pro was installed on this computer in 2009, so it still had the "anytime-upgrade-option" still included within it, and MS might still allow old copies of Win 7 Pro to use it's originally included "anytime-upgrade-option," whereas newer copies of Win 7 Pro, simply don't have the option included anymore ...

3. From what you're telling me, it seems that I was able to upgrade because the used computer that I bought and then upgraded to Win 7 Ult, arrived with oem Win 7 Pro already installed from way back in 2009, and here's the reason it might have allowed the upgrade to go through ...

The computer arrived with almost no record of MS-Win-7-Pro updates applied to it's original Win-7-Pro's OS ... After I upgraded to Ult, that is when I started to look into the updates and sure enough their were over 150 of them that were never downloaded to this computer ...

Maybe that's why the upgrade went through, because of the totally unupdated condition of the OS ... It even said on the update page that this OS had "never been updated," and that there was "no record of updates." After I finally did do over 150 updates, which didn't even register-complete until after 12-hours, then all of the update pages looked normal and were filled with all of the expected updates-urls-descriptions-info ...

We have 6 desktops and 2 laptops .... + 3 Mac lappies .... After the 1st failure, I tried all other Windows boxes... all failed. This was May 2015. I called and asked, they told me it was not possible.

The only reason I can see MS allowing this is if it it was a "non-genuine" copy and they made it legal with the upgrade. My 2nd oldest has Win Ultimate BTW, he has never used any of Ultimate's added features.

Getting back to the original topic ... Would it be fair to say that if asked, you would recommend staying with Win 7 Pro vs moving on to Win 8 Pro until MS properly upgrades-fixes it ...

One last 2-part question, does Win 10 solve the Win 8 problems, complaints, and issues that you've encountered, heard, and read about and is upgrading from Win 7 Pro to Win 10 a much better move than going from Win 7 Pro to Win 8 Pro, or are there similar reason to stay with Win 7 Pro until MS releases an OS that is actually better than Win 7 Pro is released ...

You need to be more specific.
Win 8 Pro or Win 8.1 Pro? 2 different things.

Any of the 3 (Win 7 Pro, Win 8.1 Pro, or Win 10 Pro) will work. Change from Win 7 Pro to either of the other two is strictly personal preference.

Personally, I'd go to Win 10. And did.

I don't see why you keep asking to have the same answer repeated over and over again. We recommend Win 7 ONLY.... That means no Win 8 and no Win10. That doesn't change whether it a new install, fresh install, reinstall, upgrade install or no matter how many intermediate steps are involved in getting from 7 to whatever

We did not recommend Win 8, as i said, all users who ignored our recommendation and bWin8 went thru the same process.... installation / disappointment / replace GUI with Win7 like UI / frustration / downgrade....that should have told you something. MS response to the failure that was Win 8 was Win10.

I would not install Win 8 or Win 10 if it was free. ... it was... and we didn't. Last time I looked (June) only 1 in 10 of Win 7 /Win 8 users eligible for the upgrade had done so. That should tell you something.

No matter how many times you rephrase the question, the same answer will follow. We do not recommend Win 8 or Win 10 in any form.

Because when asking that question I was replying to this kind of comment:

"Any of the 3 (Win 7 Pro, Win 8.1 Pro, or Win 10 Pro) will work. Change from Win 7 Pro to either of the other two is strictly personal preference. Personally, I'd go to Win 10. And did ..."

and your last comment about Win 10 is a very helpful comment ...
