what is too hot for my gpu?

im running a 9800GT and in F the card reads a temp of 174 degrees. thats after like 2 hrs of playing gears of war on all max settings at res of 14x9. should i use C or F to read the temp. i know its a preference thing but what is too hot for the gpu. is 100C bad?

C is the usual measurement when talking about computer temperatures. 100C is very high for that card.

well it hasnt hit 100C but i just wanted to know. its usually at 52C the most ive seen in nvidia system monitor is 78C

I like to say the max temp for any gpu is ~75-80c. Do you have a program to turn the fan to a higher speed?

dude the max temp for most cards is around 135C. 9800GX2 is around 92C under load and a fair amount of ati cards mostly are over 80C at load

I guess it's just a personal preference that I like cards to run cool, so I increase the fan speed. Where did you get 135c from, because I'm pretty sure the card will start lagging way before that. Isn't the 9800GX2 running that hot just because there are 2 GPUs in a very small space? I'm running a 9800GTX+ and the highest I've seen it go is ~65c.

i have a xfx 9600gt xxx and at idle its temp is at 62 degrees C (141 F) but when i went to play Crysis at 12x10 high the temp went up to 104 degrees C (219 F) is that normal its only a year old and i just took it out and put it into by build pc !!!!!

110-115, a card will usually shut down. Good max running temps are usually in the 80s, with anything less preferable. Depends on card,card make model, setup, and rig. Besides card to card, no 2 are alike, but with only minor variences

Well for most nvidia cards like the 8800 and the 9000 series I am pretty sure under load its best to keep it under 85C, anything over that and the card could be in danger but the GPU can handle a max of 120c before being almost sure of dying. Personally I never allow my card to get over 60C just be on the safe side But if it stays under 85C then ur good, but remember this "With computer hardware, the cooler it is the longer it lives in general"

im asking about the power because i only have a 380 watt power and it says 600watt minimum( and i never seen it get up that high in any other game so far!!!)

Well manufacture says 600watt to be on the safe side, it all depends on you hardware, if you know and can, find the model numbers of all your hardware, and i mean ALL HARDWARE!! ram,hdd,opitcal drive,mobo,cpu,gpu,...etc and then google them and find out the maximum wattage they can consume and buy a powersupply that fits all thier [*(MAXIMUM)*] wattages plus a little overhead of like 50watt, 100watts would be good also as an overhead.

Underpowering hardware can cause higher temps. Whats your rig layout? How many dvd players,Hdds etc, and most importantly, what the psu? And its 12v rails amperage?

Really need more info on your 12 volt rails output from your psu. Is your rig a OEM? I see gateway listed for your monitor?
