So i just got new mobo and cpu as a slight upgrade, put it all in, first power up, the vape nation attacks with a god awful smell. So i immediately cut power etc etc, but i have no idea whay caused this. The new stuff i got was a gigabye ga-970a-ds3pfx and an amd fx 4300. I have a xfx ts 550w psu. What is the issue? Fried power supply or just doa? It was quite a bit of smoke and it was seconds after hitting power button

If you are lucky, it was the PSU. Follow your eyes and your nose...get a strong flashlight and look for scorch marks on boards and look for stains from the smoke. Follow your nose--gently sniff (NOT deeply!) and see if you can find what component has the strong burned smell. I would recommend not plugging it in again unless you replace the PSU just in case it is what fried (or what caused something else to fry).

Yeah i took it all apart, checked mobo for booty capacitors, nothing. So i just plugged psu into the wall by itself and lo and behold a sata power cable of all things caught fire. Fortunately looks like it only toasted my old mechanical drive so new psu should be all i need. Protip: im so buying modular
