ok so i have just brought dell optiplex 580 it looks like a good pc as a base but i plan on using it for gaming it currently has a dell 305w psu it only has a onboard 256mb graphics card i'm looking for a graphics card that's 1. 1GB ram and 2. pci-e my budget is £40
i've been informed i cant change the psu as it's proprietary to the motherboard witch seems very odd so anyadvice would be good and please inc links

Clarification needed, £40 would buy for you very low power GPU (short for video card), if you can stretch it to about 75, it would give you ATI 7750, which is entry level gaming card, which will allow you to play BF3, WOW and maybe Crysis 3 (maybe) on low settings. Cheaper GPU will make you fill sorry and make you upset when you will try to play those games.

Urgent clarification needed - THERE IS NO OPTIPLEX 580!
It could be Inspiron 580 or Optiplex 780?! So what is yours?????

Next what is your PC model factor. Mini Tower it is where DVDRW is parallel to the ground when you PC is standing, if your DVDRW is perpendicular to the ground and you PC looks slim, there could be up to 4 form factors between 2 mentioned models?!
Why this important? Mini Tower can fit normal size GPU, other form factors can only fit low profile GPU, and USFF can not be upgraded!

So clarify your form factor and model, and think about your budget, or forget about playing cool games.

i'm not in to online gaming so BF3, WOW are of no intrest to me and what i have IS a OPTIPLEX 580 i have what dell call there mini tower heres the tec guide
http://i.dell.com/sites/doccontent/business/solutions/engineering-docs/en/Documents/optiplex-580-tech-guide.pdf
a normal graphics card will fit the dvd drive is at the top but i would also like to change the case as well to install the new psu and more hard drives i have a some what universal pc tower that can accomidate a lot of motherboards

I am sorry, it is Optiplex 580, did not see many requests for this model yet, but....
First and subsequently second - Optiplex 580 uses BTX standard and therefore is not compatible with modern ATX standard, meaning that you can not move motherboard to the new case, you have to stay with existing one.

Now regarding power supply, lucky you, you have Mini Tower - standard ATX power supply will fit with minor modifications, you would have to bent a few metal parts to advance power supply since it is longer than original, but it fits.

Now regarding video card. Let me explain something.

THIS POST APPLICABLE TO MT (MINI TOWER) FORM FACTOR ONLY.

Unfortunately no card that is more than 7.5 inches long or 2 slots wide will PHYSICALLY FIT inside the case - it was found that only single bracket video card can fit due to BTX MOBO, where card internals facing upward towards PC internals, not ATX, where dual card design is blocking another PCI slot by facing downward.
If you prefer the card with beefier fan, then the length of the card must not exceed 7.5 inches, otherwise only "skinny" single bracket, single slot cards can physically fit.

Pictures below will prove my point.

View shows no room for dual bracket

Single bracket only, or you have to cut dual bracket in half

Here you can clearly see only single place for the bracket

This is the picture of actual "skinny" single slot video card (not sure which model)- perfect, "glove" fit.

Now we need to find 40 GBP card.

Now the question still stands, you were thinking about upgrading power supply, power supply costs money, which you can spend on better video card, and this video card would not require power supply upgrade, so how about that?

That looks like a good solution but neaver having had a btx mb before is mine pci-e 3.0 as i have no idea i do know it's only 30 months old

Manual is very detailed except for PCIE speed, so it is definitely not 3.0, however 3.0 is backward compatible to 1.0, you will loose some bandwidth (speed of transfer between video card and motherboard), but it will not downgrade this card tremendously, so 7750 is still good way to go.

is there any other cards that will work and be a bit cheeper say under £55 inc P+P as i'm on benefits and unable to work due to being disabiled so money is allways tight but i do have a friend that can get things cheeper than retail providing he has a few options

Xfx Radeon Hd 6670 Graphics Card 1024mb Pci-e 2.1 (Manf Part Code: HD-667X-ZHF2) £49.99 + £4.65 UK delivery http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B0076Z4XEG/ref=dp_olp_new_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=new

Amazon has picture wrong, as usual the real card picture is below

I can not find physical dimensions, but this card looks very short and should fit.

So far I think I just met your target price I don't see VAT mentioned anywhere, so I hope it included, in this case - £54.64!

6670 is stronger than 6570 and supported by Dell 300 watt PSU. This is the best you can get from Amazon for this price (and it fits)!

I did not hear from you since my last answer, did I get it right?

If yes, and you satisfied with final solution, can you please close this thread by picking last post ans a solution, this way it will help others, looking for similar solutions.
Thank you.

Those are more expensive unfortunately. I offered this before POWERCOLOR AX7750 http://www.amazon.co.uk/POWERCOLOR-AX7750-1GBD5-DH-Graphics-DisplayPort/dp/B00775OC28/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1369858842&sr=1-1&keywords=7750 keep this in mind if you will have problems with Club 3D allocation.

Anything else I can help you with?

so will the ones my pc guy can get be ok in my system?
If so witch one is better?
Radeon HD 6670 CGAX-66724ZI £44
Club 3D Radeon HD 7750 CGAX-7752Z £55
my pc guy can get most things if he has a number of diffrent opctions to check with his supplyers stock and i get them at cost for example Club 3D
But these prices are only for me so i'm going by what he can get and what you recomend if u have others that i can pass on to him to check then i'm sure we will get there i sent him all the ones that you have posted and thats what he can currently get hold of in that type so the more opctions he has the better chance he has of finding the type i can use i also have no problem using ebay but i would peffer to go through my guy as i trust him more than ebay

I understand your situation. 7750 is almost 30% better, so get it!

To everyone else, Club 3d is not regularly sold in North America, mostly Asia and not so much in Europe - this is the reason for no reviews.

However, off topic, Club 3D manufacturing 7850 2GB low profile and no one else, so they can do things. Also, pay attention on their design, it is very similar to PowerColor, may be they are the same, who knows.

Power requirements for 7750 is crap - Dell install those Visiontek® Radeon 7750 cards on Dells with power supplies of 250 watt only. All 7750 have almost the same real power requirements
http://accessories.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=A6523076&mfgpid=192262

Go to Compatibility section down below and scroll through the models, you will find yours there as well, pay attention to models ending with S, those have power supplies below 300 watt, and Inspiron XXXS have power supplies of 250 watt, most of them!

So, get it and enjoy!

the OptiPlex 580 MT isnt on the list but the DT is also mine is going to have 3 hard drives in it 2x500gb and a 250gb gb that it came with and it has a dvd rw so hopefully this wont max out the psu but the psu only has 4 sata connectors on it and the normal motherboard connectors but no spaire leads

Oh man, I provided that so you can see that 7750 installs on low power supply models, Optiplex 580 Desktop uses 255 watt power supply look at page 21 of this manual http://i.dell.com/sites/content/business/solutions/engineering-docs/en/Documents/optiplex-580-tech-guide.pdf
So, no problems for you!
