what monitor should i go with?

so basicly i just found out my old monitor was not 1080p so i need to get a new one for my new pc, so i was looking at ASUS VG248QE because it has gotten good reviews and all(I dont care about its 3d support though), and i can afford it. but im wondering if its worth it, does the 144 hz really make a difference? or should i go with another monitor thats cheaper(or even several cheaper monitors) the ASUS VG248QE costs 417 usd here in norway but all our prices are high. if the monitor is overrated, could you guys reccomend me another one? many thanks

also what size would you guys/gals reccomend for gaming purpouses? 24 or 27 inch?
