Hello, I am new to owning a dell OptiPlex 3020 and wanted to upgrade said OptiPlex to support windows 11. The motherboard is a dell 04yp6j and has h81 chipset. My current motherboard only supports gen 4 and 5 processors but I believe windows 11 is 8th gen and up. Is there any compatible motherboard for the OptiPlex that also would support windows 11?

Why do you want to preserve that old pc case?
Does it have some sentimental value or something?

Anyway - Dell OptiPlex 3020 comes in multiple form factors.
There is SFF and MT form factor.
Which one of those is yours?

mITX form factor board would fit into both cases (SFF and MT).
In MT case you can also put mATX motherboard.

Note Dell...

Note Dell motherboards use non-standard PSU connections.
If you replace board with standard motherboard, you will not be able to connect Dell PSU to it.
You'll need a new PSU also. Then again standard ATX PSU will not fit into SFF case.
So you'll be screwed either way.

Just be prepared to get a new pc case and new PSU with your new motherboard.
That will be way easier than reusing old Dell OptiPlex 3020 case.

Thanks for the info! I believe it is the sff the one on the left. It is my first pc and I was on a budget so, no sentimental value lol. I just wanted to play some games and edit videos but, with windows 10 being unsupported next year I wanted a cheap upgrade. It looks like I will need to get more parts than I anticipated. Do you have any recommended cases for a budget beginner?

List your system requirements and budget.
We can probably think of something suitable.
OS: Windows 11
Processor: 8th gen or higher
Memory: 8gb
GC: Nvidia GeForce GTX 770 2GB
Storage: 2-3tb
Sound card: DirectX compatible

I would like to keep as low of a budget as possible and will upgrade later on. I really want to get into pc building but, I'm not 100% on the specs so. I don't mind spending a little extra if its worth it. If you have any suggestions, I would love to hear them.

You will have to specify upper limit for your budget.
Do you already have a discrete graphics card?
GTX 770 is a rather ancient card. You won't be able to get that new.
Do you already have enough storage drives, that could be repurposed from your old pc?

Are those requirements for some specific game?

$800 - $1000
I'm not sure if I have a discreet graphics card. How would I check?
I'm not sure on the storage drives either.
I bought it refurbished from Amazon so probably factory specs
Yes they are for RDR2. I don't plan on playing that game but I want to be covered

Something like this would be a decent midrange gaming system for ~$1000.
(if you do not reuse anything from your old pc).

For pc case you may want to choose something specific for your personal aesthetic taste.
